Why should puerto rico remain a commonwealth?

Raimon
Because the majority of Puerto Rican have voted three times to stay in that status. Puerto Ricans value American citizenship but also want to maintain their own separate cultural and national identity. People who favor statehood or independence have not managed to convince a majority of people to change.

Commonwealth, conceived in 1952, was not meant to be a temporary status, check the Congressional Record and the history books, not the current revisionist attempts by some proponents of Statehood and their paid cronies in the White Hose (the so-called Barrales report).

When a majority of Puerto Ricans decides that statehood or independence are better than commonwealth, Puerto Rico's status will change. Until a consensus is reached, the status quo will prevail.

They keep more sovereignty and a common national identity.

Puerto Rico is in a really sweet position in the sense of their commonwealth status. Although they are aided by the US, they don't have to pay any taxes to them. For that reason, Puerto Rico actually has no desire to become a state. It would only be advantageous, perhaps, if the US decided to cease aid.

First of all P.R was supposed to be a commonwealth for only a few years(transitionary period) until the country defined what they would become. What happened is that we have remained in that stage for the last 52 years, and the U.S Congress or the White House have not made up their minds of what real options we have as a country in wich to choose; Independence, statehood or remain as we are. !Is like when you turn 18 but still live with your parents!. If the country remains a commonwealth it would have to evolve to a more self dependant goverment rather than the "budget manager' with no 'decisionmaking-power" that it is at this moment.

If Puerto Rico became a state it would start to lose its culture - which is what happened in Hawaii. When I visited Hawaii I realized that they are trying to retain and relearn their culture (native language, music, history, etc.) It's a shame that some of it has been lost and it shouldn't be allowed to happen to Puerto Rico.

rhaydenyahoo is wrong in that electing Mexicans will not attract Puerto Ricans to become a state since the Mexican culture and the Puerto Rican culture are completely different. The only thing they really have in common is that they were both colonized by Spain, so they both speak Spanish - but even that is not the same.

They get to suck off the system without having to pay in.

Because P.R. depends on U.S. and viceversa. The U.S. provides P.R. with what they need while P.R. lets them use the army bases that are stationed in P.R. I think after so many years of being commonwealth, P.R. will never become a state and after not having to pay taxes, they are all good the way they are. P.R. is such a wonderful place to live especially since they have beautiful mountains and awesome weather.

Because their culture is too different from the mainland. But the USA is changing since the Mexicans outnumber the white people, Once the USA starts electing mexicans then Peurto Rico will become a state.

For PR, they keep their independence.
For the US, territories aren't as much of a drain in resources versus states. And since PR wouldn't pull in as much money as the Fed would give the new state.....
