In jan,08,2007 the regulation for traveling by land tourist,or tourist who spend their time on resorts in the Caribbean, will come to partial end in terms of convenience.
So if you are going to need your passport,if you don't have, get one if you intend to travel to the Caribbean,ASAP.

When visiting Jamaica from the United States or Canada all visitors are required to have with them proof of citizenship which can be a valid passport or a certified copy or original birth certificate along with a picture ID such as a driver's license.

I have been to Jamaica three times. Did not need my passport, but if you have one, take it. I got along just fine with copy of birth certificate, especially when trying to leave Jamaica. If you are not certain, call your local travel agency, they can help you.

Thrawn
Yes. You will always need a passport when traveling from country to country.

Beginning January 8, 2007 you will need a passport to re-enter the US, until that time, your driver's license/state id and birth certificate are acceptable.

Hope this helps.
