The governor of Puerto Rico calls it historic. If Congress approves the plebiscite proposal - it already has the backing of President Bush - residents of the Caribbean island will be given a chance to vote on whether to become a state, break away entirely from U.S. control or continue as a commonwealth. Writing from San Juan, Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico and the U.S. Senate are preparing for the first vote in more than 20 years on whether this tropical island of 3.3 million Spanish-speaking people will become the 51st state.
A plebiscite planned for 1991 would allow Puerto Rico to decide ... |

I seriously doubt it. |

I don't know, I think we will remain as a territory. Really the Congress doesn't care about our status. I support the statehood (I'm not PNP), but I don't see the day, that US will give us the opportunity to decide our fate. Indeed there's one flag with 51 stars and more. I read they have different flags up to 56 stars. Probably they were thinking in Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands or DC. |

Honestly I really hope that Puerto Rico does not become a state. We are fine the way we are.I don't even see the point of becoming a state...yeah we'll be able to vote for the president and we'll have to pay federal taxes(which isn't a problem) but in reality there's no point.Puerto RIco is going to end up just like Hawaii did,not knowing there native language and their identity being replaced with "American."English will become the dominating language and our language will be destroyed!!I don't want that.Becoming a state is not worth losing who we are. |

Right know seems impossible with the sour economy and other issues going on (too expensive). Then you'll have to worry about the neighboring nations entering illegally as well. I prefer if we don't. Hmmm...I wonder if Spain is interested in purchasing it for a couple Euros???? |

It is great to be proud of your culture or of being Puerto Rican but Puerto Rico is heading towards the gutter with huge unemployment rates, increased cost of living and housing. Puerto Rico's educational system would be in the **** hole worse than it is if it didn't have the federal government financially backing up things. I hope that PR will eventually become a state so that the economy can improve (infused federal money will help). Puerto Rico can not support itself without the US government helping out. People should be more open to the idea! |

I don't think so. USA is the most powerful nation in the world, if they would it want us as a state, it would be done by now, be sides, it's non well profit for the Unite State. So I'll say, first will be come the independence than the statehood. I only hope nether one. Regardless of what lot of people think we have the best of both worlds. |

The island is divided on this issue, they can't decide what they want. If the choice was to be completely independent or become a state, It must become a state. There are a lot of people that want complete independence, what no one tells them is that that would mean no FEMA after the hurricanes, no Section 8 for housing, no Social Security Benefits for our elderly, no WIC program, no PELL Grants, no Federal Student Aid. |

Yes, more probably we will get statehood before US Virgin Islands or Washington DC. There are also several movements to divide a current state into two; but still I think PR will be the next US territory to be admitted as an state. |

Not if Washington DC beats it to the punch. They already have an American flag in Puerto Rico with 51 stars. Believe it or not it looks good too, 3 lines with 8 stars and 3 lines with 9 stars, totaling 51 stars. |

It will probably either remain a terrerrtory or become a protectorate kind of like cuba was at first. I do not think it would be annexed because it is extremely poor compared to the poorest state its poorer than arkansas or mississippi or any other state. |

I think not- because then there would be no reason to have Puerto Rica Day parades in NYC. It would be like having a Kansas day parade only without strong food and broken styrofoam coolers everywhere. Manhattan makes far too much money from luxury hotel bookings during this parade to lose that by making Puerto Rico a state. Also spray paint sales profits alone during the weekend of the Puerto Rican day parade exceed 10% of the NY highway budget. It would be great to make them a state but financially I doubt it. I can only hope that someday they can be a state so I can retire there and have servants. Go to PR someday.. if you can.. it is fabulous- like Beverly Hills in the nicer areas- and just like in Beverly Hills all the help speaks Spanish so adapting is extremely easy... Booking a vacation there this week. |
