Will the USA ruin Cuba after Castro dies?

I don't think that US tourists in Cuba would ruin it. It may increase demand and therefore the price but I don't think they would ruin it. If anything US tourists would only help Cuba.

Personally, I think the embargo helps to support Castro. I also don't see it being lifted once Castro dies. The embargo was put in place a couple of years after the revolution, after Castro nationalized everything and confiscated billions of dollars worth of property, businesses and other assets owned by Americans without compensation. The Embargo is an attempt to get restitution for that property not some simple Anti-Castro move. The fact that Castro is alive or dead, in power or not I think has very little effect on the embargo.

Many people, especially Cubans think that the only reason that they do not live in the promised workers paradise is because of the embargo. That is a joke.

They can trade with the rest of the world, but their country is still in desperate shape. Infrastructure is either outdated, broken or non-existent. Workers are unmotivated, production levels and quality of any goods made for domestic consumption is terrible. You see things in Cuba that you just wouldn't see anywhere else, staggering in inefficiencies.

We all have witnessed how much of a struggle former soviet block countries had/have adjusting to a free market economy. Cuba's struggle will be equally great, if not greater, since advancements continue while their economy continues to stagnate. The country totally lacks in most every area a modern economy would need to flourish. I'll give you well educated but that's about it. If the US lifts the embargo, it removes the excuses, then Cubans will realize that communism has failed them. Right now the Embargo takes all the heat and provides a ready made excuse for all the short comings.

You know - I'd think if I tried the same thing for 40 plus years and it didn't work I'd start to look a alternatives, but I guess that 'radical' kind of thinking isn't fashionable around the US state department.

End the embargo - end communism.

Ruin Cuba?...no. The only factor that has ruined Cuba is Fidel Castro's dictatorship. I was born in Santo Suarez, Havana and to tell you the truth, my hometown looks like it has gone through 5 years of civil war. The streets are ruined, full of holes and sewer leaks. In fact, people have to fill the streets with the fallen concrete from their homes. The hotels that once flourished and were well taken care for and managed are now being closed and demolished. Job opportunities have also decreased and even more kids are born with no clothes to wear or toys to play with. The bottom line is that over the years and especially after Cuba lost the Russian support, the country's tourism and beauty has significantly decreased. Cuba is a wonderful country with beautiful people and most are very well educated but they don't have the opportunities or resources that are abundant in the U.S. So the only thing that the USA could do is help the already ruined country that is Cuba.

I think the Cuban people do need a little help - try by lifting the embargo - most of the other countries in UN want it lifting only 4 voted against it being lifted.

Hopefully they won't try and bring back the casinos and all the other so-called benefits of American democracy. Americans constantly brag about their freedom and yet the American government won't permit most of their citizens to go to Cuba. Of course, they are free to go to Communist China whose human rights abuses are legendary. Such hypocrisy! as a Canadian who has enjoyed visiting Cuba eight times I can honestly say that many tourists comment that they go to Cuba because they want to go there before Americans ruin it. Many so-called Cuban-Americans have never even seen Cuba in real life and rely solely on reports from the dissidents in Miami. The U.S. and its puppet governments which included Batista and the ruling elite used the working Cuban as virtual slaves before the revolution. Castro is a far cry from perfect to be sure and I do hope conditions in Cuba will improve but the propaganda from Miami isn't necessarily true. If the U.S. would lift the embargo no doubt the lives of the average Cuban who is affected by the embargo would improve immensely. Every other thinking nation certainly has no qualms about dealing with Cuba.

Some politics want to let cuba be a living proof that communism leads to poverty.

Others want to trade with cuba and make some profits.

The Cuban government will have to be sure that with the Yankee dollar don"t come all the Yankee headaches.

It would be well for Cuba to see how Viet Nam, China, and even Eastern Europe have opened themselves and try to avoie the mistakes made there (pollution, too much money floating around, uncontrolled capitalism).

Cuba is an independent country which makes its own decisions. I am always surprised that Americans who constantly comment on their own attitude to freedom do not endorse Cuba's equal right.

Right now the Cuban economy is seriously affected by a trade blockade by the US.

Perhaps readers would care to reflect about the situation that their country would be in if they were unable to import or manufacture such significant items as medical pacemakers for children.

Cuba has an extremely well educated population and some sophisticated manufacturing. People may well be amazed by the country's success after the blockade, condemned by most other countries, is eventually lifted.

I think the US could be a good source for Cuba to have, imagine Cuba after Fidel getting rebuilt and people actually being free from the wrath of Castro.
Being a travel and tourism major in college, I know that Cuba is a goldmine waiting to happen. Imagine if the blockade wasn't there, the island would be doing so much better.

The streets would be fixed, buildings would not be collapsing, people can actually eat the fish they fish instead of selling it to the people outside of Cuba.
Fidel owns everything down there and I think that is just wrong.

If there were not so many stubborn people on both sides...Cuba could be a flourishing country with excellent tourism and tons of cash would be flowing in creating more opportunity for people on both sides.

The US trade blockade is for American companies and citizens. America has trade agreements with countries all over the world, Fidel likes to have his citizens in poverty while the politicos live well. Cuba can trade with anybody they want just not the US, Too bad. I have traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and Cuba is on the bottom of every list of places to see, Cuba specializes in poverty thanks to its own government.
