Will you need a passport to visit the US Virgin Islands?

Some of the answers you got are confusing to me! If you are a U.S. citizen, you DO NOT NEED a passport to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands. If you go to territories not controlled by the U.S. you will need one. Go to the web site below to read the very clearly stated regulations for yourself..to avoid any confusion.

No, it's a US territory.

r92_29r
No you do not because it is governed by the Federal Government of the United States.

But watch out once you get there because on both the British and the U.S. Virgin Islands, vehicles are driven on the left-hand side of the road, yet most cars on the islands have their steering wheels on the left side (usually common for drive-on-the-right localities).

just_treva
you DO NOT need to bring proof of citizenship if you are traveling entirely within the united states (and, yes, USVI is part of the united states)

but you DO need to bring government-issued photo in order to get on the plane if you are 18 y.o. or older

a passport is a great photo ID, but a driver's license is just as acceptable!

*** if you are coming from somewhere other than the United States, then yes, you will need a passport!

have a great trip, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

there are alot of wrong answers and bad info out there regarding travel to and from the USVI and Puerto Rico.

Even some airlines have it wrong..see the question also in Caribbean about North West Airlines policy...

to sum up: If you are an American, you are travelling only between the US mainland and PR or the VI you do NOT need a passport. see the link to travle.state.gov.

If you are travelling outside the USVI and PR.......like to the BRITISH Virgin Islands you DO need passport.

Some AIRLINES requier you have a passport even if the US Government doesnt. Check with them seperatly.

Everyone got that? This WILL be on the final......

Yes, under law if you are flying in and out of the United States as of January 23, 2007 you will be required to have on yet if you are cruising down there then you will need a valid ID like Drivers License and a birth certificate.

Yes you will need it as of January 2007.

This seems to be the latest on entry requirements to the US Virgin Islands. Your timing is perfect---the rules change as of today:
A valid passport is the principal requirement for entry into the BVI although US and Canadian citizens are currently allowed to enter using an authenticated birth or citizenship certificate (with raised seal) along with current picture identification. However, effective December 31, 2006 as a result of the US government’s Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative which requires all US citizens to reenter the United States with passports, passports will be required by all visitors entering the Territory.
