i just got back 2day from casa marina reef, sosua, puerta plata, its a 3 star all inclusive hotel, it was only 10 mins from the airport which was great no long transfer! food was lovely and different everyday, no complaints on the drinks, pools were excellent (3 pools) jacuzzis are lovely, its right next to the sea and has 2 beaches one of which has taken a battering with the recent bad weather, thanks to the wind the flight was only 7 hours on the way home, rooms are comfortable and everything worked in our 2nd room, first room was awful and by a generator but if ur not happy they move u asap which they did and all was good! weather was varied most scorching days some rainy and widy with a violent sea, we caught the back end of a hurricane that visited tahiti! lots of people go back to this resort year after because of value for money, the gifts and souvenirs in DR are expensive!! really is tourist extortion, they think all tourists are stupid and rolling in money, u can haggle alot on flea markets and pay 10% of the original asking price, we stayed here for 3 weeks and it cost £1700 for 2 adults all inclusive, hows that for cheap!! works out at just over £200 a week each! there are some good excursions, paradise island is a must! so is ocean world but swimming with dolphins is expensive there (twice the price of cuba) we booked with thomas cook and have been happy with our holiday, just a shame to be back! last thing is u leave resort be careful as you would anyway, dont carry alot of cash, check the area as some are very safe some are not, sosua is one of the very safe areas but you still get mithered to death! thats the only thing that puts me off leaving the resort aside from day trips, theres only so many times u can listen to cheapy cheapy before trying not to knock someones teeth out!! have a great hol! |

I lived in Sosua for nine months and it is a nice tourist town with about 1000 ex patriot living there. You have to figure out how much of the country you want to see though. You can spend your whole time in an All Inclusive and mever meet any Dominican other than the people working there or you can get out and see what the country is really like.
There are all kinds of adventure trips you can take to see waterfalls, go mountain biking, kite boarding, whale watching. If you are less active you can take a tour on top of a bus to go see the countryside and see local villages.
The only thing is never to drink water from a tap and use common sense away from the tourist areas as you would in any place in the world. Bottled water is very cheap. Hotels will run anywhere from about $25 for a basic room with no A/C to well over $200 for a place with a view of the beach. Incidents of tourists being mugged are VERY rare.
Also stay away from salads that may have been rinsed in tap water. The rule in the third world is "fried food is safe food" Ice is always safe as it comes from a central place where it is made from sterile water. |

Its amazing, you should definately go. ive been to Punta Cana and Santo Domingo (the capital) I stayed at Club Med and it was amazing, its an all inclusive resort and its worth the price even though its a little expensive. The beach is private so you dont have to worry about people asking you for money. |

It may depend on the area. I've heard Punta Cana is nice, but not much there besides the beach. I visited a few years ago but was in the Puerta Plata and Santo Domingo areas. It's not a place I would recommend to anyone I cared about. I've visited other impoverished countries but this was the worst. Everywhere you go someone is always trying to get money from you, either begging or trying to sell you something and they don't know how to take no for an answer. Some will follow you. A few times I had to curse people out. Also there was trash everywhere which really marred the beauty of the area. If you want some place beautiful and relaxing try St. Lucia or St. Kitts/Nevis. Both islands are beautiful and people are very friendly. Also Dominica is a very beautiful place. Its impoverished but people don't harass you. |
