Oh my God here we go again

Chloe i think you are a little confused, you say you would like to get away from materialist Canada yet you say CHE GUEVARA IS YOUR IDOL. like my friend here says a materialist.

Well said EL LOCO put him in a coffin.

Now can i please tell you my story and i know i will get thumbs down but what the hell.

I come from a Materialist country, i married a Cuban and now i live here in Cuba, i am finding it very very hard to adjust to the harsh conditions, just trying to buy the basic items that i need to survive is difficult,as they are not to be found. Chloe if you want to buy a pint of milk you just go to your local shop and buy it, I on the other hand have to go out and milk a cow, of which i am finding difficult to do right now until i get the hang of it. If i want to eat a chicken i have to kill one again i have not quite got my head round this. I am having to learn a whole set of new skills, called, survival skills, as my good friend here said to me yesterday in order to survive the reality of Cuba i have to break the law or we just die. he is so right, thank you for that my friend.( you know who you are)
RIKKI : the Cuban people have hearts of gold to their own people they are always there to help they are true friends not just people you know, like back in my own country, which is what i have come to realize, to tourists they welcome you with open arms because they need you or want something from you WAKE UP.

No i did not come here with my eyes closed i know a lot about the history and how this country works but knowing and living it are totally different.

I have now lived on both sides of the fence and i know exactly what the Cubans here are trying to tell you all but you just DO NOT LISTEN.
Pleas take a look at a question i have posted here it is a song i think is perfect

SAQUE SUS CABEZAS DE LA ARENA Y DESPIERTESE PARA LA CAUSA DEL DIOS

THE BIG I had not forgotten the total lack of freedom for the Cubans here, i just deliberately omitted it for reasons that you are thinking right now. Yes i have a choice, i am fully aware i can leave whenever i choose. Unfortunately the Cuban people can not. I am here for the love of a man not the workings of the country. I did not want to offend anyone buy putting this point over

CHLOE can i also point out one thing, i understand what you mean when you say you would love to leave the materialistic country you are in, and yes there are positive and negatives on both sides of the argument here. When i visit my home country i have a different attitude altogether, i no longer buy things because i want them i only buy what i need. Here in Cuba you cannot buy what you need, however i love the simplicities of the living, if this makes any sense.

Additional info

BEV I guess you have not been listening to anyone here either
I suggest that you re; read all the comments here including mine . Bye the way I am also British.
I know Many Cubans who will do anything for you to get tips so they can feed there families, and buy medical supplies, they are desperate.

1 - No until big bad old fidel and the little brudder close their eyes
2 - I know some things, but it would be a little long. I can say that we have been ruled by a comunist regime for 50 years, half century
3 - We are survivors

To chloe:
Of course you cannot understand it. To understand it you must live in Cuba , under the same conditions as we live

Well, if you want to eliminate materialism in canada, that is just perfect.
Dedicate your time to your country and let us deal with ours

Right, we have not experienced racism, but we have suffered oppression. So many pros and good things that we risk our lives to escape from that marvel

As far as I see, most negative opinions here are from Cubans, and I think that we have been in Cuba

By the way, el che was a materialist

Of course man, that's every Cuban dream, is a paradise, the only bad thing and unfortunately very bad, is the killer government that rules the country, but if you are a foreigner that would not bother you.
The Cubans?, we are very nice people, very helpful and we are very good hosts.

Not now. I am waiting for fidel to join its ancestors. We have been under a comunist dictatorship for 50 years, causing death, torture , and exile of more than a million people

Excuse me. Somebody says that fidel is symbol of .....?

Ah, a good point. Discrimination. I can say something about that.

A friend of mine, who was my boss as well, was Catholic, and when a member of the Party ( not the party with balloons and cakes, but the comunist party, THE ONLY ONE ALLOWED IN CUBA ) became the director, she made life very difficult for him.
He protested saying: "They discriminate me. Not by the color of my skin, but by the color of my ideas"

Finally, a member of the State Security told him: "Doctor, leave or else". And those words from that kind of people are the worst threat you can hear in Cuba.

He had to leave and come here as a political refugee

el loco
Absolutely !

I am just waiting for fidel to disappear from the surface of the earth

Well, I know that we have had, as some people have already said, a comunist government for many years

Fine ! If somebody loves fidel, they can have it. Take it home, stuff it, put it in a museum

the big
I am anxiously waiting for fidel to cease to exist to go ( and the brother as well, of course )

I know something. Can you be a little more precise ?

We have suffered the worst dictatorship in our history. We have a great inventive. There were a group of people who adapted a truck into a floating thing and came here, but those nice guys of the coastguard sank it

Dear mc, you are right, but more important is the absence of freedom

Only thing we are free for is for following the government orders
And some people ( comunists ) will say that we are in that condition because of the embargo. Not true
We are in that condition because the system doesn't work

Of course, Viva Cuba, but without fidel !

bonita
I have heard that Cuba is very beautiful, but I have also heard that it is a very tough Country. My inlaws live over there and sometimes what they tell me makes me think twice about going to visit.

But I would love to visit if Florida is beautiful I can only imagine what Cuba may be like.

As for the Cuban people they are people that welcome you with open arms. They have flwas like any other human being and issues like any other society, but for the most part I have great admiration for them.
They are fighters, inventors and overcomers.

Not even three hurricanes in a row have weakend there spirits.

Cuba is in my opinion the most beautiful island in the Caribbean. I went for a holiday in a 5* resort and although we have paid for this service previously in other resorts, Cuba is the only place we received 5* treatment. To say that only poor people go there, as one post said just shows ignorance.
Sure there are political problems, more so than most countries, but we were going for a holiday, we are British, not Americans the only people the Cuban Government have problems with are the Americans. For obvious reasons. But the people of Cuba are the warmest friendliest people you could wish to meet and unlike most caribbean countries they are not just smiling at you to take your money, they are genuine and continue to help and be friendly even if you don't tip them. I have found over recent years the more common tourist islands have now being spoilt by the locals trying to make a fast buck and begging for tips for their wife who needs an operation or a child they can not afford to feed. On one recent holiday i booked taxi to go to the next town, when a local jumped in the front of the taxi, he apparently was the guide who came complete with the taxi despite the fact we didn't need or want a guide, this was compulsory and his fee was equal to the taxi fare. The next time I visit the Caribbean it will be to Cuba or one of the less well known islands and not the other money grabbing, well known islands, including Mexico.

I visit Cuba every year and have for 4 years . It is an incredible place with amazing history and friendly courteous people. I know that Cuba has its problems but I think that with recent oil found off its coast and the input of friendly countries it will get better and better.

It is worth a lot to save the architecture alone the colonial style and abundance of buildings exists nowhere else.

I say Viva Cuba!

I don't understand what it is with all the thumbs down and whatnot. Cuba is a BEAUTIFUL country. I am assuming that most of the people that disagree with me are Americans who have been greatly influenced by their government.
But guess what guys, CHE GUEVARA IS MY IDOL.
Cuba is very popular with Canadians, Argentinians and English people. Many of you are making unfair, biased judgments and I'm sure that many of you haven't even visited the country.

So maybe it is cheaper than other places. At least it is a vacation that I can afford. The people are wonderful, the culture is interesting, the food isn't that great but hey, doesn't bother me too much.

EDIT: Furthermore, I can understand that many Cubans are not enjoying living under a dictatorship, and maybe I am wrong but I would love to get away from the materialism of Canada. I can't fully appreciate the hardships of living in Cuba, but I understand that there are also some pros. Many people have told me that they have never experienced racism. I am very interested in the development of this country in the coming years. I personally would hate to live under such a dictatorship where I wasn't allowed freedom, but I don't agree with us outsiders judging so harshly.

Lovin' Life :)
going next week! Can't wait to experience it! :)

Riki
Cuba is very definitely a great place to vacation. The beaches are terrific, the scenery fantastic, there's no shortage of activities to keep you going day and night. Cubans are proud of their country; they welcome visitors with open arms and will treat you like visiting royalty. Chances are if you go once you will return again and again. Check the sites below they contain tons of information. ,
