Would you vacation in Jamaica?

Jamaica is advertised as the land of wood, water and sunshine! The home of Bob Marley the Great! The people are supposedly nice and friendly.
But on the other side, Jamaica is also said to have a high crime rate! What do you think? Is it worth the risk? Would you vacation there?

Jamaica is the greatest, dont be fooled by what you hear on teh news or in teh paper, just like in any other part of the world you just dont go to certain spots.

I live in Kingston and I own and operate a vacation and tours company and after taking my clients around, they realise there is nothing to fear and a lot of them do come back to do the whole island tour all over again.

Visit Jamaica, eat some jerk food, get wet on the beach, and drink all you want, the island is nice, if it wasnt I wouldnt be able to do business at all.

Just Friday I booked a week long trip to Jamaica. Can hardly wait, too! It promises to be a beautiful country with some of the nicest people anywhere.

Jamaica is very beautiful and it's certainly worth a visit, but crime is definitely a something to consider. Compared to other islands in the Caribbean, it feels more like a different country. I've stayed in two types of places -- resorts and rented houses. The resorts are self-contained, which means that all services are on-site and they keep guests sheltered from the outside. Those types of places don't give you a great feel of the island and country. The other alternative is renting a house, which my family did many years back in Port Antonio. That part of the island (northeast corner) is simply stunning, since it's more hilly/mountainous, and the beaches are beautiful. If I were to go back, I'd rent a house there. Regardless, continue to ask around to learn of other people's experiences about the crime.

No, it's beautiful no doubt, but 1 foot outside the resorts is abject poverty.

No, Jamaica's full of crime. Go to the Bahamas instead, it's much nicer.

i did, but it's true you do have to be careful of where you go there as the crime rate is high. don't go to kingston though, that's where the crime is out of control. it was so poor that it made me feel bad, and i doubt that i would ever go back.

I liked Jamaica better then the Caymans. The people seem real there, they have a very high poverty rate so you must be careful not to get into the wrong places, but for the most part I liked both, but Mexico still tops my list for vacation followed by China

yes i would my family live out there and its nice to vacation but like every other country jamaica has a bad side it has the highest crime rate in the carribean next to haiti as the second highest for less crime visit bahammas but for real fun Jamaica is #1
