America, too!
A simpler way to handle the problem is to just STOP! handing out welfare money. If someone wants to eat and shop, they will have to work and earn it! If the freeloaders rob or cause trouble, they should be immediately eliminated! COMPLETELY eliminated. |

NO, NO, NO!
Sounds too much like state imposed slavery. A law saying you must work. Come on, everyone needs to conform. No one will be different. Everyone works.
No don't get ME wrong, I believe if you want to eat you should work. But if you don't need the money and can eat, then fine.
If you want taxpayer funded government aid, yes you should have to work for that.
So what happens when there is a recession and wave after wave of unemployement. Is that illegal? Do those people go to jail.
Say for instance you want to be a beach bum. And you get by without being a drain on society. Whose business is it if you work or don't work.
I hate seeing people who leech off of society. I think that is wrong.
I haven't been employed for over 3 years. But I work for myself at times. Mostly I just hang out with old ladies and take them to play bridge and shopping. I don't seek anything in return since they are my friends. But this is a good way for them to get out and have fun.
My point is, one size never fits all. Britian is different than Asia. America is different than Asia and Britian.
It is a good question and should provide for a good debate and banter of ideas. |

If this was the case, you'd have to change employers' ideas about employees. Currently, most employers love the idea that they can fire an employee whenever they want for any reason ("at-will employment" - especially popular among white collar jobs). If you require someone to be employed, then the grounds for dismissal would have to be heavily scrutinized as it would essentially be a prison sentence. "I'm sorry, Bob, you didn't do so well on the last project. Enjoy jail!" Seems a little too socialist for my tastes. |

I think it's a great idea, unless they all come flocking here by the hundreds of thousands to claim Medicare and Public Assistance off our tax dollars. |

I'm an American, but I don't see the benefit of paying for healthy, non-violent people to sit in jail just because they don't have a job. And then since they're in jail and can't look for work, would you hire someone to look for work for them so they could get out?
I guess debtor's prison in the 19th century was sort of like that. Maybe you should read Dickens to see how that worked. |
