5 day CARIBBEAN cruise...tanning? |
I am going on my first Caribbean cruise for 5 days in April and I want to get a nice tan. I know the sun there is way more extreme so i will be using an SPF of at least 50. If I use an SPF that high will I still get tan? Also I heard that if you use baby oil you will tan faster...true?? If so could I just mix it in with my sunscreen and still get tan?? |

Do not use just baby oil in the sun. It gives absolutely no protection and you will get a serious burn (my cousin did this about 20 years ago and ended up being hospitalized with 2nd degree burns).
The key to getting a tan is moderation. Always use at least an SPF 4 on your body and more like 8 to 15 on your face, particularly your lips, nose, and ears (use a SPF 30 or better lip balm) when you start going into the sun to get accustomed to it. When you first go into the sun, don't spend more than an hour at a time. Turn over every 15 minutes (front, back, left side, right side). Once you develop a base tan over the first couple of days, you can spend longer in the sun, or the same time but without the sunscreen (always keep it on your lips, nose, and ears though - these are very susceptible to burning and can be very painful, especially your lips).
When you get a sunburn, you are actually damaging your skin with radiation. It then heals itself and pigments are formed at the burn site for future protection. If you spend too much time all at once in the sun, the skin gets damaged and keeps getting damaged (sunburned). If you keep rotating, your skin gets damaged initially. But, the healing power of your body repairs the skin cells before permanent damage can be done. The result is a tan instead of a burn.
Use SPF 30 on all exposed areas of skin if you're just out and about. This includes the tops of your feet if you're gong to be wearing sandals. You never know how long you'll be exposed to the sun, particularly when it reflects off of the ground, water, and buildings. And, you won't realize you're getting burned until it's too late. |

If your are thinking of a SPF 50, I would not recommend baby oil - or any oil for that matter. you will be fried. Mixing will not do anything for your tan.
enjoy your cruise |

Stay away from the baby oil, it will defeat the purpose of the sun block. You will burn. Get yourself some Neutrogena Micro-Mist airbrush sunless tan spray, it works really well if you use it correctly. Keep in mind to use it sparingly because it darkens as it sets. I use this all the time & no knows the difference. Then when you get on your Cruise you will already look tanned however still use your SPF of 50 @ all times & you will still get yourself a natural tan from the sun as well. Also, don't forget to get yourself some sunblock for you face, very important. Clinique has the best I ever used, spf of 25. |

it is difficult to get color when you wear SPF 50....
try using tanning oil, with a SPF of 15, it gives you enough protection, but you still get a nice tan.
(mind you, this is for a person my skin color, SPF 15 does not make my skin burn; if you do need a higher SPF, use it ! I would rather be white with no skin cancer, than tan with skin cancer!) |

You can still tan with sun block on, although, unless you are very fair, you probably don't need SPF 50. I would stick with SPF 30 or so, and reapply often. Do not use baby oil, though, because it essentially works as a magnifying glass for the sun, and will counteract the effects of the sunblock, and fry you like a potato. Another thing to consider is using a lot of sunblock the first few days (nothing sucks worse than getting a terrible sunburn the first day of your vacation), and then if you don't have the color you want, tan more (with less or no sunblock) in the last day or two of your cruise.
Have fun on your trip! |

SPF 50 is like covering yourself in a blanket. You wont tan at all.
Im not sure about the baby oil thing...but it makes sense.
I reccomend getting a SPF 6-10 tanning oil sunscreen.
It protects you from the sun for a little while (for probably 30 minutes, hence the SPF6) but the tanning oil attracts the sun to tan you, not burn. |

I wouldn't recommend mixing products together so just use one or the other. The UV lights make you tan and sun lotion blocks it. If you want a tan go natuarally without using sunscrean- not even that high. |
