A question about carnival cruise lines?

Ok my husband has some unpaid traffic tickets in another state that he never went to court for so there may be a warrant out for his arrest. When you go thru customs do they do a background check on you? (Like the police do when they pull you over) We don't want to risk going if they do.

No, United States customs does not care if you have a misdemeanor warrant for unpaid traffic tickets. I have been on four cruises and I had a misdemeanor warrant that I didn't even know about for at least two of those cruises, didn't cause any problems at all. This should not cause any problems getting a passport either. Whenever someone is looking for warrants, they would be looking for more serious felonies, so stop worrying and go have fun! I would, however, recommend trying Royal Caribbean instead of Carnival.

You shouldn't have any problems. Upon embarkation, you will go through customs and most likely won't even have your bags checked. If you are going to the Bahama's or Caribbean, you won't need a passport, just a birth certificate and photo ID. Just in case you are worried that your husband may not be able to obtain a passport with outstanding warrants. After 12/31/06, however, a passport will be required to go to those destinations.

Nope, custom will check your passport, ask you where you're heading and if you're taking any "contraband" (the won't really call it that) with you. As long as you're not traveling with anything illegal you'll be ok.

Lost@Sea
No, they don't. When you go through customs at embarkation, they are basically verifying that you are who you say you are, and that you're an american citizen. When you leave, they do the same, as well as to make sure they have their cut of that new watch you bought, but as long as you don't seem too nervous, they won't look in to you. If however, they pull you aside, they could very well run a check, it doesn't take too long, but too long for them to do it on thousands of passengers. Why just not pay the tickets?

tech_fanatic
He could have problems getting a passport if he needs one, but, otherwise he should be fine.

When you are on a cruise they really don't do much. While on the cruise and arriving at port, they check to make sure your I.D. matches up, when you get off they have to check that you claimed the items you purchased and in some cases do a random check. But I've never seen them do anything other than that.

Now, if you are going this year and going some place where you don't need a passport, you are fine. However, if you are going next year, he will need a passport and I don't think he could get one with this background.

Carnival has nothing to do with this--controlled by U.S.Customs Service. Usually they just check your I.D. If you don't have a passport you will need a valid state issued picture I.D. and a birth certificate. IF this is your first cruise enjoy it. Don't drink to much--the bill at the end of the cruise will cause a heart attack!!!(smile) ENJOY Preacher

You should see a lawyer about it. But only state authorities have the right to enforce misdemeanor laws in their own states.

Princess Buttercup
If he has a warrant, this may cause problems if customs scans his passport. Talk to a lawyer about it to be sure. This has nothing to do with Carnival Cruise Lines - all they care about is getting the money from you. : )

No I dont think customs perform background checks. I think they just verify your identity for boarding the ship. That could change though with the way security is getting these days so I wouldnt hold off too long on that trip. Have fun!!

Paige
I wouldn't think so...but if you are sailing after Dec.30th you will need a passport.

Customs only look at your i.d. and birthcertificates, social security cards (well they use to) and take your paper that you filled out... I have never known them to look at anything along the lines of that...or I have seen them be able to scan anything..

They are just at a table and take your paper that youfilled out w/ info asking your name: addresses: they ask if you are taking any fruit out of the country....which you can't,,they want to know how much duty free purchaese you made etc.

The last time i went ...we just handed the customs guy our paper and walked past.......although we had to wait for hours,,,for customs to clear the boat..and for the drug dog to sniff all the luggage that was unloaded from the boat...

So ..watch out there..... make sure if you borrow someone's suit case that it is empty,,,

They are not going to put the time into checking the background of every single person on the ship. The only concern I have is that this might come up when he tries to purchase his passport. I don't know where you are taking off from but when I take off from Florida (3 times) they really don't bother with doing much of anything, they are more concerned with what you are bringing back into the country & other countries in my opinion wouldn't bother even if they did have the power to know any of this. They rely on us for too much revenue for their countries. I really don't think that will be a problem but if you are still concerned then call CCL and ask them. I think it will be fine!
Have fun :-)

no they just stamp the id card from carnival, or draw a smiley face on it in RCCL's case. They do not check that extensively.

That a loaded question! Meaning I have never had a problem with the cruise lines.. U don't have to go thru all of that w/them but that's if you are boarding/debarking in the US Port. You guys will be cool! But Ports outside of the US.. ie: San Juan... coming back in to the US & w/the new "Homeland Security" computers is a Motherfu*ker! They can't detain you & hold you for "tickets"! But if there is a "Warrant Issused" they will advise you! Just play dumb like U do when u get pulled over!!! HAHAHA!!! But U have no worrys! Just don't get pulled over the day of ur cruise!
