It depends a lot on which cities and towns you are going to in Alaska.
We usually do our own thing when cruising by looking at the tourist information sites of the places we are going to, but that's quite difficult when 4 cruise ships arrive in a small port. Every thing is booked
Many of the places you actually go to are small enough to get around on your own by walking or getting the local bus.

On my cruise to Alaska, to save money,I did my own thing some of the time. Some ports are fun to just walk around in like Juneau. I went to the Red Dog Saloon for one thing. Just people watching is always an interesting thing to do. Now I did take a shore excursion, I believe in Sitka. It was the White Pass railroad and was spectacular. It's well worth taking this particular shore excursion. So to sum it up, take some shore excursions and wing the rest when you get into port, but Always make sure of the time you have and don't wait to the last minute to head back to the ship. I have seen people miss this ship almost every time I have cruised.

The problem with Alaska is that it is such a vast country. Although you will see glaciers, birds and the occasional big animal from the ship, the most spectacular sites, scenery, animals etc. are best viewed from land. I too take my own excursions when I cruise to the islands in the Caribbean; it's difficult to get lost on an island. But Alaska is very different. I've been to Alaska twice (on cruises) and even the 2nd time I wasn't willing to head off on my own. The chances of missing the boat are too high, and you really need a seasoned guide to take you to the best places, like through Denali National Park, to see the magnificent wild life. Of course, for the cities you don't need an excursion; just read up on what to see before you go. And as for snow, yes you will see snow. Depending on when you go, there will be snow at least on the mountain peaks. If you want to explore Alaska on your own, then I suggest that you forget the cruise, fly to Alaska, rent a Land Rover and map out a personal tour (and make sure you are in excellent physical condition). The excursions for an Alaska cruise are quite pricey, but definitely worth it. If you are taking the time to get to Alaska it is worth seeing what it is all about. Going into the towns is quite interesting as well and always leave time for shopping. The glaciers are amazing. It was 80 degrees when we went in September. The whales were quite active and I would highly recommend spending time out on the deck looking out into the sea, because there is always something to see whether it be whales, orcas, sea lions, etc. It is an experience. Have fun!
