About tipping on a cruise, what does it mean for a passenger to adjust the amount of their tips? |
Also, another question, how can a passenger tip independently? |

Adjusting the amount of your tip, applied to the automatic tipping charge of $10 per day per cabin passenger, means adjusting it upwards. The automatic tipping charge is normally the minimum tip expected.
You can go to the pursers desk and ask to have the automatic tipping removed from your account, once this has been done you can tip whoever you like and as much as you want.
Tips are usually given to the stateroom steward, the dining room waiter and his bus boy.
The pursers desk may give you envelopes to put your tips in. The dining room staff are usually given their tips when you have your last dinner on board and the stateroom steward on your last morning. |

Most cruiselines automatically add the recommended amount to your account. This allows the passengers to increase or decrease the amount at their discretion. Having said that, the great majority of people who work on ships earn most of what they take home in tips. I really like the automatic tips, because then all the staff members who serve food or clean get a portion of the tip pool. If you remove or decrease the tips, the front desk will want to know why to see if they can correct any situation to your satisfaction. Also if you remove your tips then the people that you tip independently will need to take that amount from their personal tip and add it back to the pool. I have never been on a cruise where the cleaning and food staff didn't earn every penny! Most people who remove tips are just cheap and want to get out of paying anything, IMHO. My husband and I just leave the automatic tips and as appropriate hand over extra tips for those people who go above and beyond the call of duty. They really do try to do everything to make sure you have a wonderful time. We take extra one dollar bills to tip at the port (for your bags, one dollar per bag minimum) and for room service a dollar or two for coffee/ snacks to $5 for a full meal. . |

Most cruise lines charge a set fee to your on board account for tips. This charge is usually $10 per person per day. If the service is better than average, you can request to increase this amount. If the service falls below what you feel is expected you can tip less than this amount.
On drinks orders 15% is automatically added for tips. This amount can also be adjusted if you feel an adjustment is warranted.
The above changes are called adjustments to the tips.
However, I have never had service that I felt was less than at least average. What I do is I leave the standard tip amount on my on board account. Those that deserve extra I tip in cash. So to answer your question, yes, you can tip independently. In fact you can request that all tips be removed from your on board account and give all tips in cash. However, I don't like to carry that much cash around in small bills, so I prefer to charge my tips. |
