Alaska Cruise Summer 2009? |
Hi, me and my family are thinking to go a cruise to Alaska. We live in So cal and apparenly there is no departure port around so cal. I was wondering if its better to fly to nearest port and go from there or do they usually come with a package? How do i get most out of the cruise? Because this is our first time! Thanks |

You can come to San Francisco or Seattle to catch the ship to go to Alaska. Their is one leaving on Sept 1 out of SF on a 10 day run if The name of the ship is the Sea Princess if your interested. Are you sure that San Pedro or Long Beach don't offer Alaska cruises? |

We went on our first cruise ever last Sept. to Alaska on NCL's "Pearl", a very new ship, and it was great! It left out of Seattle. I think you have to find your own way there, but from SoCal it isn't a long journey. Be sure to get a balcony room so you'll have a view and a bit more room than a stuffy inside room. Leave the cellphones and laptops behind and you'll be in a whole new world. NCL has something called "freestyle cruising", which is nice because you can eat whenever you want and with whoever you want, unlike most other cruise lines. Also take some onshore excursions when you're in port, even though some can get pretty pricey. Do it anyway! There are lots of memories in the entire experience, so take a camera or two. Also take along some Dramamine or Bonine in case someone gets a bit seasick. It works great, I can tell you. Check out www.NCL.com and you can find out what cruises are coming up and where they depart from and anything else you'll need to know. There are some great deals out there lately, so go for it and have a blast! |

The closest to you is San Fran. They also depart from Anchorage, Seattle & Vancouver. The package deals unless stated does not include air fare. The best way to see Alaska and a good part of what it has to offer is a cruise/tour. Right now Princess is having a sale on all of their cruises. Princess.com or 1-800-Princess. Which ever you pick you will be able to see Amazing Scenery, Wildlife & meet people from all over the world.I have been there over 20 times and this is a cruise everyone should take at least once. To see the Glaciers, Wildlife etc. is something seeing it on TV or a book does not do it justice.
The benefit to departing from Seattle or Vancouver instead of San Fran is you would spend less time traveling and more time enjoying the sites.
You could check with your local AAA or check time & distance sites if you prefer to drive.
Enjoy. |

Our first cruise was Alaska with Princess which we can recommend. Suggest you start from Vancouver and go to Anchorage (port of Seward). Going right up into Alaska should be your priority, not boarding convenience at the start, or only going part way because you started further down the coast!
Adding on a pre trip of the Rocky Mountaineer from Jasper/Banff is a must if you can afford it/spare the time. Alternatively a post stay in the National Park is well worth it! Princess offer both options
The most important thing is to make sure you are going into Glacier bay to see the 5 glaciers. Make sure you go right up to Seward and then you can go white water rafting. Take a helicopter trip(s) up on to the glaciers!
You will have a great time!
When you have decided check out vacationstogo.com who are usually the cheapest and have a very comprehensive website that allows you to compare everything! |

I just booked a round trip on the sea princess from San Francisco to Alaska. They have several cruises available for this summer. Mine is in August. I have also traveled round trip from LA to Hawaii, but that was in the fall. That was a wonderful cruise (14 days) and one of my favorites. |
