Anyone ever got married on a cruise?

How about I answer your question because I did.

My husband and I got married last summer on Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas (world's largest cruise ship).

We had an absolutely amazing time! We really could not have asked for anything more.

So, here are some details:

The reason we chose to get married this way is because neither of us wanted a traditional wedding. I refused to get married in a church, we didn't want to feel forced to invite all these people we didn't want, and we wanted to spend our money on something that would last beyond one stressful day.

So, the preparation does take quite a bit of work. Make sure you find a travel agent who has done this sort of work before because they know what you have to do. You are a little limited in some of your choices but there is always the option to bring in some of your own things if what they cruiseline offers doesn't fit your needs.

We chose to get married on the boat. We got married in Montego Bay, Jamaica. My father is in a wheelchair so for us it was so easy to have the wedding on the boat. We did get off in the morning to tour around the port and I am so happy we didn't get married on the beach or something. It was absolutely deathly hot that day. Montego Bay is dirty and shabby. So, the boat (with its AC) turned out to be the best option.

Once you get on the boat, you're met right away by your wedding coordinator. This is great. We discovered something we needed for the wedding had broken and the wedding coordinator was able to find us a replacement!!

Now, one issue we did run into was my husband's tux. We opted to rent one on the ship because it meant we didn't have to transport it with us. On our first day there, we went to pick it up only to discover they didn't have any in the size that we had ordered. So, we had to go through the hassle of having the ship's taylor alter it for him.

The day of the wedding was wonderful. The ceremony was beautiful and the reception was fun (from what I remember!). for dinner, we booked one of the ships specialty restaurants. These are not included in the price of your meal but for about $20 per person, you get the benefit of a more private, intimate setting.

Anyway, our families all had a wonderful time...even those who didn't initially agree with our decision to get married this way. And, the best part is, we got to spend an entire week with them for less than the price of a traditional wedding!

So, if this sounds good to you, by all means I encourage you to check it out.

One of my good friends got married on one of the ports.. not on the actual boat. Was pretty nice.. they got married on the beach in Key West.. then after that we had 5 days left to party on the boat.

I got married off the boat, but we travelled by cruise ship and got off in Nassau and got married. I made the arrangements ahead of time, set up a package paid 900$ and my hubby and I got married on the beach It was lovely. Please be careful of the requirements though, the Bahamas requires you to be a resident for 24 hours so make sure that your cruise ship will be docked for enough time, because remember you spend several days at sea as well.

My sister got married on a cruise out of Galveston, TX January of 07. And I was there. I thought it was really nice. You get to cut the cake and give toasts.....just like any other wedding except kind of quick and small. But how nice to get married and have a honeymoon right then!

Plus, it made for some really unique and beautiful wedding photos.

I didn't get married on a cruise, but my husband and I did consider it. We decided not to because we wanted too many guests at the wedding. But, if you want a very small gathering set in a unique beautiful setting, I think it's a great idea. Just be sure to pick out the right cruise (not too old of a ship, the right length of the cruise, and the right price for everyone to afford). As someone else mentioned, you might also consider getting married at a port that the cruise stops at. Maybe all of your guests could meet you at the port for the wedding itself and then you and your spouse can take the cruise by yourself for your honeymoon.
