Anyone have experience of just showing up prior to a cruise and getting a cabin?

Due to the events of 9/11, most cruise lines have now changed the guidelines, requiring all guests names to be finalized on the manifest 48 hours prior to sailing. However, if you are already booked on the cruise you may have a chance of upgrading to a higher category, dependent on availability of course.

I have taken many cruises booking them last minute, like 1 or 2 days in advance. But, I have never just showed up to the cruise line and got on the cruise. The thing is that a lot of cruises are actually filled, so, it may be hard to find an open cabin. I think that you could find some pretty good deals if you are flexible with dates, destination, line, etc. But I don't know that I would risk going up the day of the cruise to get on.

I'm not say it isn't possible, I'm just saying you may be better off booking it a few days in advance. If, you live by the port or something, it is always worth a try, but I'm not even sure if the cruise lines allow people to book this way.

You may consider calling up a few lines and asking them if they allow you to book at the port.

My Brother has done it several times.

They did not want to let Him and GF on when I went on a Carnival bet he explained that we tried to book together and some bs that I did my own and told him I have reserved it, him thinking I meant for his two also. He got an awsome suite for the same as my cabin!!!
we found from the perser that there are usually several suites not reserved in the event of VIP request or travel agants asking as a favor to squeeze another couple to join with friends.

My brother has since gone on two more and at very good rates.
His friends went on a three week Pacific, and he contacted their agent two days prior to departure. Bingo, she got him in!

Almost, I did it at a hotel. I was on a long road trip somewhere, and I was dressed in my usual unlaced Timberland boots, blue denim jeans, Answer dirt bike shirt, and red hat turned backwards. I show up at the desk of a Holiday Inn and there was a family of four waiting for a room. They seemed like they were wealthy. The small children were being bratty and getting into everything while the mother was trying to get the clerk to understand that she made reservations and paid ahead of time months ago. She was understandably pissed off. So here I come, spend all of 10 minutes at best getting my room, and I'm set. Then I heard her complain about the ease I had in getting a room. I offered my room but she declined by saying that her's was paid for in advance, and then thanked me gracefully.

It can be tricky and usually the only cabins left are in the lower levels of the ship. On rare occasion you might get something furthur up on another deck.
