Apparel for Captain's Dinner on Carnival Cruise..Please help!? |
I'm not really a dress gal, but we are going to the Captain's Dinner during a cruise we're going on in March. I have found several very dressy/formal pant/shirt outfits that look great. Does anyone know what the dress code is with the dinner and if that type of outfit would be permissible? Thank you! |

I think your dressy/formal pants outfits would be fine. I've never seen jeans on Captain's night, but I have seen casual dresses. If you want to splurge, try checking the clearance racks from end December on (stores will want to get rid of New Year's Eve things) You might even be able to pick up a nice skirt. My last cruise I wore a little black formal dress I found on clearance for $20.00. Don't forget jewelry and dressy shoes. I will wear heels into and out of the dining room, but have been known to carry them as much as I wear them. Nobody ever stopped me. You are going to LOVE Carnival! My favorite line. |

Captain's dinner is the fanciest dinner of the whole week. Dress nice. |

I've been on quite a few carnival cruises. I think you'll find that on formal nights, people will overall dress nicer than they will on casual nights. You will see the older crowd in tuxedos and gowns, but especially on Carnival, you have more flexibility. I've seen people wear cowboy hats, jeans, and cowboy boots for formal nights. I'm sure that what you found will be fine. |

In my opinion slacks are too casual. Cocktail gown at the very least. The Captain will be in his dress uniform, and the other patrons at the table will be in Tuxes/dark suits and dresses. |

Cocktail dress for ladies, dark suit or tuxedo for men is appropriate attire.
In all honesty, though, people showed up for the captain's dinner (Carnival cruise) in short sleeve shirts and jeans. I can't say the staff was happy about it, but the idiots didn't get kicked out. |

The Captains Gala dinner is the most formal night of the cruise. This is when you go all out... hair, makeup, shoes, and a fancy dress. Men are supposed to wear a suit, with a jacket and a tie, or a tuxedo. At home, I'm strictly a jeans and t-shirt gal myself, but when my boyfriend and I go on our once yearly cruise I dress up for dinner every night ( if we go to the main dining room for dinner.... if you go to the upstairs buffet dinner you only need to wear casual attire ). I have been on about 10 cruises, and on the night of the Captains dinner I would say about 90% of the women are wearing very dressy, shiny, glittery, formal, long dresses and gowns. As I said, I do not usually wear dresses, but on a cruise I figure, Hey, I'll never see any of these people again! So I wear whatever I want to. If you really don't want to wear a dress, I'm sure a formal pant suit will work just fine. Of the remaining 10% that I mentioned, 5% of them are wearing a dressy pant/blouse combo, and the other 5% are dressed very casual.... just a step above buffet casual, as they are not wearing shorts or flip-flops, but very close. Actually. on the other nights ( if you eat in the main dining room ) a lot of the women wear a dressy pant/shirt combo. I would say as long as the outfit looks formal, and has some sort of a silky, shiny, dressy appearance, you'll be just fine. There is usually a sign posted outside of the dining room that says, " No tank tops, flip flops, jeans, or shorts permitted in the dining room." They're SUPPOSED to ask people dressed this way to leave, but I have NEVER seen them turn anyone away. Also, the number of formal nights on your cruise also depends on how long the cruise is.... generally, 3,4,and 5 night cruises have one formal night, 7 night cruises have 2 formal nights, 14 night cruises have between 3 and 5 formal nights, and so on. To spare some room in your suitcase, wear the same shirt twice, but with different pants, or vice versa. No one is going to notice that you're wearing the same pants you wore on the first night on the fifth night. Also, if you like having your picture taken, photographers will be everywhere on the Captains dinner night. Each photo station has a different backdrop, so I reccomend going to all of them to get your picture taken. The next day, you can go and look at the photos, and buy the ones you like. Or, if you don't like any of them, you don't have to buy anything. They are a bit expensive, 10 - 20 dollars a picture, but they are a great way to remember your cruise. Have a great time!!! Cruises are a LOT of fun!!! |

We have been on 42 cruises and we have seen everything from church clothes to tuxes and evening gowns.
Not everyone can afford to buy or rent tuxedos and dinner dresses.
a formal pant suit is totally fine. The way people will be dressed will be about 40/40/20...40percent in REAL FORMAL....40 percent in less formal...like church clothes or easter sunday clothes and 20percent not even dressed for the occasion at all....
DO what YOU feel is comfortable...you are on vacation, dont make yourself uncomfortable...
HAVE FUN |

Yeah, the Captain's Dinner is formal. Most of the men are wearing tuxes and the women are wearing formal dresses. Carnival isn't as formal as most of the other cruise lines, but it is still formal. I am going on my 3rd in Sept. and I am wearing a black skirt with heels (no hose because its long and no one will see), with a black tank top with beads on the bottom. It matches the skirt and I bought another shirt to go with it for the 2nd formal night. Go to www.carnival.com and go under FAQ's and it will tell you what to pack for the trip length that you are going on. Also, you can rent dresses from them for that night in advance if you don't want to buy one. If you don't want to get a dress and could miss the dinner, just go to the buffet on the ship and skip that night. |

since there is a black tie dress code for the event, idiots in jeans and short-sleeves should be banned from the dinner, but they no longer are. it's the fault of the cruise lines, who think they will make less money if they enforce any rule which might be construed as oppressive to morons. |

Any women not wearing a black evening dress is not properly attired for a Captains dinner. |
