Are you able to use cell phones and internet on a cruise?

just curious :)

TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
You can use your cell phone in and near your departure port if you are leaving from the US. AND, you can use your cell phone in port stops if your cell phone carrier provides service in that country/city/port. In addition, On many ships you can use your cell phone by getting a signal from and through the cruise ship's satellite system. If you do this through the ship use the fees are very high; in the range of $3.00 a minute or more.

When we have cruised to foreign ports my wife has called our cell phone carrier to make sure there is service and also how much and in some cases buying or signing up for special plans for that country. The best thing to do is wait until you get to a port city to get a signal from a regular tower rather than the ship.

All cruise ships do have internet service and they charge by the minute. The internet service on ships is very very expensive; in the range of $50 to $60 a hour. Again, its best to wait until you get to a port to find an internet cafe. They are almost always available and the cost is generally in the range of $4 to $7 an hour.

Check before you go, but the ones I work on do. There is a charge for the Inter net and a possible premium added to your mobile bill. but as I said contact the companies to find out if available and costs etc.

I went to Alaska, and we were able to use our cell phones, but the roaming charges were twice the amount. As for the internet some are free but most charge a fee. Go to the web site of the cruise line and it should tell you what the fee is.

soccerstarrapp
yah, but its not cheap.

Wendy
call your cell phone carrier and check your plan. unless you have international minutes they may let you purchase a one time/month deal for so many minutes for a set price which may be the best(and cheapest)way to go.

Sometimes you can use a cell phone, and sometimes not, but it is always very, very expensive! Many ships have internet service available, and it is also very expensive. There are many internet cafes available on shore at most ports of call, and if you ask members of the crew they can tell you where they are.

randall_nd
Internet cafes charge around 75c a minute. Some ships have their own telephone cell, but with major roaming charges. The best way to phone home while on a cruise is to purchase a prepaid calling card at some island and use a pay phone.

Cell phones only work when you are at or very near a port. The internet is available to use in many places on the ship, but for a price. They have ports you can plug in or they have internet cafes with computers for your use. You buy time to use the internet.

expecting a boy in june 09!!
not the one we went on, it was carnival cruise you can use internet but it's about $140 for a min, honestly i love the idea that no one can call me or contact me, i need the time off from people and just be with my hubby!
