C1/D Visa Application - DS-156 Form? |
I am in the UK and have an appointment with the US Embassy tomorrow to get a C1/D visa. My letter of employment has arrived, but it doesn't state the period of my contract, does that matter? Also I don't seem to have proof of my return to England. I have no intention of outstaying my visa... can someone advise me. The website doesn't help much. My contract is 6 months on 2 months off... is this why I don't have an employment length as it's an on going thing, but on a contract to contract basis????
Also, when you fill in the DS-156 form - what do you put for US address - I've just put the name of the ship.
Thanks in advance |

I just came back on the 6th from the US Consulate in Belfast, after successfully applying for a C1/D Visa.
Your letter of employment (cruise ship?) should state your contract start date and not necessarily the length of contract.
My letter of employment does not have a return date or details on returning to the UK, so I guess they just infer that you will be disembarking the ship when you get home and not stay in the US.
On the DS-156 for the question about the stateside address, I was instructed by my employer to write "On Board Ship" which I did and everything was fine. They gave me a list with the answers to most of the questions on the D-156 / D-157 which was helpful.
Hope this helps. |

Hm. Knowing when youre contract is out could be a good idea but I dont know if youre ok with just telling/writing that.
If youre staying on a ship it might help to write the ship name after on board ship esp if youre on one ship all the time.
I think that its good to clearify that you have a way of going home when youre contract/holiday is over even if it just mean puting something like "employe pays for tickets" or "plans to buy tickets when my contract is over"... Its just so theyre dont suspect that youre gonna to stay in the country as an alien.
Otherwise its good tip to be as honest as possible. If theyre starts to suspect something you can be denied for no reason at all. Good luck. Johan. |

I never had any problems with my C1/D.
In fact in 2001, right after September 11, my name was spelled wrong.
I'm Denis and it was written DANIA.
They didn't care.
The last time I renewed it they gave me 10 years and I told them I was doing only one more contract. (I left ships in 2005).
The only thing that has always happened to me was when entering the US with my C1/D, I was always sent to the "little room" with all the illegals. I never had any problems there, just took an hour or for my turn and you gotta listen to them being very rude to some obscure people who don't speak English at all. Other than that, it was always fine. (And I hate it in 2 different Passports - one is European) |

They will give you a C1/D visa for 5 years.
C1/D is for working on the ship/transit,is not a big deal for you.
After you finish the first contract go to the Embassy and request a B1/B2 if you want to go around US.
Not a big deal.Have fun on the ship.I hope you got Royal Caribbean. |
