we brought our own last year and let the kids have one.
I never saw a place on board where you could rent them/ |

I have seen lots of people and children using walkie talkies on board ship. Its an easy way to find out where the wanderer has got to. I have never seen them for rent on a ship but I have seen them in one on-board shop.
You are better buying what you want before you go, they are guaranteed to be cheaper than on board. |

Yes, you can. We use the 2-way radios to keep in touch with our teen and tween daughters so they can enjoy their vacation and we don't worry about missed check-ins.
Notable...get a system with alot of channels. The radios are popular and there can be alot of traffic on the common channels. Make sure the hand units have belt clips for easy carrying.
Take along a power strip for the base charger. There is usually only one power outlet in the cabin.
You can purchase the radios while on board but you can get a much better deal and selection if your purchase them prior to your trip. Make sure to mark your radios someway. There are usually several sets of the same radio being using while on board. Carnival does not rent the radios

I did this on my last cruise and it is apparently becoming more popular. (Carnival even sells them on board) The problem is there are only so many channels and although the ships are big they are not that big, so there is overlap of signals and you could end up talking to someone other than your, child or spouse. As long as you can live with that, or want to spend the money for a high end radio then go for it. It helped to find the children when they were in the Casino and we were in the lounge. |

We have used ours on cruise ships without any problems. Sometimes reception is poor (I guess surrounded by to much metal!).
As for - can you hire - ask the cruise line about your specific ship. |

Cruise lines actually encourage the use of walkie talkies. It won't interfere with their avionics or whatever that's called on a ship. |

I've seen people using them. A great way of meeting up with rest of the family if you get separated or go and do your own thing |

Sure can. Lots of people do this. I find it a pretty handy way to keep track of someone on the ships. They are so big, you can't go around yelling when you are looking for somebody. walkie talkies work great on a ship and are a perfect Accessory. I have heard you can rent them, but I do not know for sure if you can. I bought mine before my first cruise. |

Yes. But PLEASE use them discretely, so you don't bother other passengers. |
