Well, if this is your first cruise you might want to check out the Introduction to Cruises, which explains about what a cruise is "really like", and answers a bunch of FAQs including how to avoid getting sea sick, what's included vs. extra, etc.

With regard to shore excursions, in Mexico I'd encourage you to book through the cruise line. Here's an article about the pros and cons of going with the cruise line vs. a 3rd party:

BTW, the zip line is awesome. But be sure to book in advance, because it was all sold out on my last Mexico cruise.

On carnival cruise lines (and others too) they have shore excrusions. It is on the ship so just go to the shpre excruision counter and you can sign up. You have to pay a fee though.

If it's your first cruise, I'd agree that you should go with the ships shore excursion. It it more expensive than doing it on your own.., but Mexico can be kinda sketchy.., locals will do about anything for a buck and you can find yourself in broken down vehicles and such.., and if you are on a ship shore excursion they keep track of you and make sure you get back and hold the ship if they need to.., on a private one you are on your own.

Also, I went ocean kyacking and snorkeling when I was there.., and it was great! Ziplining is great too....,

Check with the cruise ship itself and see if they offer this as an excursion. The main reason to book your shore excursions with the cruise company is they guarantee that they get you back to the ship on time. Every cruise that I have been on, I have seen someone miss the ship. That can ruin a vacation real quick. The other reason to book through the cruise line is safety. When you get into port, there are always a bunch of tour people ready to take you to wherever, bu I have also seen their vans break down and be dirty too. If you do decide to go on a tour on your own, make sure they give a plenty of time to get back to the ship, like at least two hours before. That way, if they get stuck somewhere, you have a good chance of getting back on time. Have fun on your cruise.

You didn't say where you were going in Mexico or which company your going with. But all companys will have shore excursions at decent prices. Stay with the company reccomndations, dont take excursions on your own.

Also Mexcio has great shopping and great beaches.
