Can a person show up at the port on the departure date of a cruise and get a cabin? |
My family wants to go on a cruise vacation on the week of Dec 22 or 23. But prices are ridiculous. Has anyone ever tried doing this? Does it actually work? I understand that if the ship is sold out then you are out of luck, but you can try different ships....help! We want to know if it can work. |

There is no way this would work.
The prices are higher because the cruise always sells out over the holidays and people are willing to pay the higher price.
You have to show proof that you've already purchased your cruise to get past security. There isn't anywhere to "buy" on to a cruise ship.
They have printed passenger lists and your room cards already made up. I assume these can be changed if the information is wrong, but I don't think they'd change the whole passenger list to get someone on, even if there was room.
You're lucky if you can ever even have the option of "upgrading" once you get there.
Book it and don't be disappointed. Prices will go up if anything. |

No. The cruise line needs two weeks to clear passengers' names through security.
The prices are so "ridiculous" because they can fill the ships up at that time of year - supply and demand, you know. Christmas and New Years are the most-expensive time to cruise.
That's generally the most-expensive time of year to book any vacation, because everyone wants to vacation then. |

The answer to your question is no. This was possible prior to September 11, 2001. However, now the cruise lines have to submit a passenger itinerary 72 hours in advance, so by showing up on the day of departure you are already three days too late.
As for a Christmas time cruise - forget it. This is a very popular time to cruise, which is why the prices are so high. Either bite the bullet and pay the inflated price, or pick a less popular time to cruise. |
