TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
If you want to see the Mayan runs, like Chichen Itza or Tulum, you need to take a cruise that goes to the Western Caribbean and has a port stop in Cozumel (or Cancun). Go to cruise line web sites and search for tours/excursions from the Cozumel port stop. Chitchen Itza is the best place and it is a huge place with a pyramid and acres of Mayan ruins around it. You can get tours to Chichen Itza from Cancun or from Cozumel. The Tulum site is not as large as Chichen Itza. If you do this tour from a cruise ship I recommend that you do the tour that the ship offers because from Cancun to the ruins is about an hour's bus ride each way on the highway. If you go from Cozumel you will have added to another hour ferry ride from Cozumel to the mainland and then the bus ride.

We did the Chichen Itza tour from Cancun a few years ago; we used a company called Best Day.

Another Mayan ruins tour is to Tulum. Here's a link to the tour that Carnival Cruise line does to Tulum: http://www.carnivalcruiselines.com/ShoreExcursionDetails.aspx?portcode=CZM&excursionname=Mayan+Ruins+of+Tulum+(Ultramar)&excursioncode=304022

Royal Caribbean also does Tulum tours: http://www.royalcaribbean.com/shoreExcursions/product/detail/view.do;jsessionid=0000QDga3NLrXj_IyWKe7aFiTGi:12hdhu6tq?ProductCode=CZH5&DestinationCode=CARIB&sourcePage=shorexByTypePortDest&ActivityTypeId=1

this march i took a cruise on carnival and it took me to the mayan pyramids. and yes the mayans did not disapear the population just dropped. they other cruise lines but i took carnival.

shhhhhhhhhhhimhiding
Last year we took a cruise that stopped in cozumel.....there is an excursions thats approx 7 hours that takes you to Tulum which was fantastic...it has a beautiful beach, although you dont have alot of time to do both since you have to travel from cozumel to the mainland. Carnival offers the excursion and well as independent tour guides. Look at the western caribbean cruises as they seem to offer ruins from a few of thier ports.....Enjoy we had an awesome time

Your best bet will be Carnival Ecstasy which is either 5 or 7 days cruise. I just got off from Ecstasy 5 day cruise which went to cozumel and Progresso. You can book shore excursion arranged by the ship which is pretty expensive atleast 2-3 times higher then do it yourselfer.
I would recommend do you research on the port names and you can find local guys. You can also easily find local guys when you get there.

You can bargin for the price half or 1/3 of the amount ships charge. You can shoot to for Chichen or Tulum from Cozumel. Or you can try from Progreso. There are other small places close to Progreso which is called Dzilbulchtan which has small ruins. It is in't that far and took us only half day and paid just $40 roundtrip for a taxi.

So check out carnival Ecstasy for any western caribean tours with great beaches and Pyramids to check out..

We just booked with CARNIVAL a western caribean cruise we get to go to Cozemel and Calica and we spend all day at bot ports like 7am to 7-8 pm and they had excursions that had lots of ruins day trips hours long. I hope this helps. We spoke with an agent named Pedro and he sent us videos from his cruises and they helped us choose seeing his views of everything.

You want to go on the Western Caribbean cruise (nearly all the major cruise lines off this area). The last one I was on, I saw great Mayan ruins. Some of the ports offer more than one, so you'll want to research the options ahead of time so that you get to see as much as possible. Some are in different stages of excavation and others don't have pyramids. The two that I went to were Xunanlunich Ruins in Belize and Kohunlich Ruins in Mexico. The Xunanlunich Ruins were fully excavated and included a very large pyramid. The Kohunlich Ruins were vast but the structures were a little smaller. Both were well worth seeing. There were other Mayan Ruins offered as excursions - as it is a popular thing for people to want to experience on the cruise ships. If you take pretty much any cruise in the "western Caribbean" listings, you should be good.

the port of Calica (Playa Del Carmen) is less then an hour from Tulum so if you find a cruise that goes there you can see Tulum and the incredible beaches around there. Last year we took the Tulum tour and then went to a great beach bar call Om Tulum and we may go back and stay there for a week, it was so beautiful!! Do a search for calica cruise excursions and you'll get some great info on Tulum maya ruins tours.

Progresso is the best starting point for Chichen Itza but not sure if any ships visit there anymore.

Belize has Mayan Ruins tours too, to Lamanai ( incredible), Xanantunich and Altun Ha.

Costa Maya, Mexico also has tours to Chacchoben and Kohonich but the port was closed due to a hurricane, may open next year

For the best viewing of pyramids you need to take a ship that goes to Progreso (Mexico) or Belize. Ships that go to Cozumel do not have time to send people to Chichen Itza because it takes 13 hours to do a tour from there

Progreso will give you easy highway access to Chichen Itza, Dzibilchaltun or Uxmal

Belize will have tours to either Altun Ha or Xunantunich

you should post during more regular hours for more responses, night sugar ;-)
