Not only can you stay on the ship while it is in port, sometimes you can get a great deal while all the patrons are on shore.
First off, the boat, while in port, is not access restricted. A hotel that floats is a great analogy. You have a key, you can come and go as you please. Just make sure you are on board before it leaves, and that you take your key onshore with you. Now since the boat is only in port for a few hours, and there are many things to do at the port of call, most folks leave the ship.
THIS LEAVES GREAT OPPORTUNITIES (Move to that empty space):
Call the spa, they often have cut rates while the ship is in port.
Enjoy the gym, there are often very few folks in the gym as they are onshore. Personal trainers are much more available.
Restaurants that are open often have specials.
Go climbing on the rock walls --> no waiting and repeat climbs.
Shuffleboard, ping pong, other deck games --> no waiting.
Lay out and catch some rays like a rockstar --> Ample chairs on any deck you choose. You may even get so lucky as to find yourselves alone on a multi-million dollar boat deck, in the best sun of the day.
A meal, and a drink are always available.
A Bar or 5 are open, 24/7, on a cruise ship.
The buffet never closes either.
If you must stop enjoying life, this is also a reasonable laundry time, and better nap time. It is quiet and nothing is moving much.
THINGS YOU CAN NOT DO:
Gamble, the casino only operates while the ship is underway.
Eat is some restaurants. The buffets are always open though.
Drink in some bars, just like the disco, they have hours.
MAYBE, MAYBE NOT
Swimming, some ships use this time to clean the pools. |

I just came back from a cruise. We went with NCL, and there is no problem if you don't want to get off the ship during the day. You can stay on and do whatever you want. Everything was still open on our ship. (We did not have a casino onboard). I'm not sure if all cruise lines do the same kind of thing, but each night, a daily newsletter was delivered to our cabin, giving complete details of the next days activities onboard. Then you can plan your next day out in advance. If there's something going on that you want to stay onboard for, no problem! Have a great time! :) |

There is never a requirement that you get off in the various ports. When the ship is in port, there are always specials at the spa which makes them almost affordable. I don't know why you don't want to be off the ship much in cozumel, but just as a suggestion, there are several all inclusive resorts that offer full use of the facilities and unlimited food and drinks for the day for under $50. |

Yes you can stay on-board the ship if you want to at any port stops. I have cruised the Caribbean so much that there are stops where we do not get off the ship; have seen what we want to see. Its a great time to enjoy things on the ship and usually the spa has great specials on port days.
The only thing that for sure will be closed is the casino. The gym, pools and hot tubs and the spas, eating places and some bars will be open. Some ships have lounges that will be available for you to use but there will not be music or bar service. |
