Really, I think that the original purpose of cruises were for "grown folks" to relax and have a great time. As the cruise industry has changed, it has become more family friendly and well suited for those with and without kids.
There are a lot of lines out there that cater to adults, or only have a few kids on board. The things you want to look for. Go during school, this always means fewer kids on board than during school. Most lines don't offer as many activities for kids during this time and kids also don't have as much fun because there are fewer kids on board that are there age. This greatly reduces the number of children on board. Also, you will want to look for a cruise that has the least amount of activities for kids, if any at all. Parents definitely don't want to take their kids on vacation where there will be nothing for them to do, it won't be enjoyable for either. And finally, the more expensive lines tend to be more popular among adults, though sometimes it does jump from most families onboard to being mostly seniors. If you can afford a more expensive line, you will find a lot less families on board.
Lines like Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Disney are really popular among families and younger kids, so these may be lines to avoid. However, Carnival also is one of the best lines for people wanting the Las Vegas style atmosphere with gambling, drinking, partying, etc. But, it is also the least expensive of the lines, meaning it is less luxurious and attracts more budget travelers, college aged kids and young families.
Here is a link that should really help you: http://cruisecritic.com/index.cfm You can then go under the "Cruise Styles" section and pick the categories that fit you best to find what will work best for you. They have romance, solo, gourmet, etc. So you can look through there to find what you need.
Finally, a travel agent will probably really benefit you. Unlike what some people think, more often than not, a travel agent runs the same price as booking directly with the cruise line or an "online discounter" and in some cases less than. But, you will be able to ask all your questions, get advice, etc. It is really helpful, especially when looking for something more specific.
I hope this helps! |

If by grown, you mean older, then Holland America may be for you. If you are middle of the road you may wish to look at Royal Caribbean, Princess or Celebrity. |

Just about any cruise line except Disney and Carnival are for people age 40 and over. Cruises which go at the beginning and ends of the season, outside the normal summer vacation periods also have more mature adults. Cruises like the Mediterranian and Baltic and ocean crossings also do not usually have young folks, or not that many.
For example, we just did a Baltic cruise and they were fewer than a dozen children on ship and only a hand full of people under 30. There were a lot of retired and older people on ship. I have found this to be the case on Princess, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Celebrity cruise ships. |

Depends on what you mean by "grown." On my Royal Caribbean cruises the children were, for the most part, in separate areas or out of site. They're so busy with activities in their own areas you never see them. And, there's a Solarium with pools and whirlpools where children are not allowed. If you're looking for older adults, any cruise over 7 days will have an older crowd. Holland America ALWAYS has an older crowd. I understand that Princess does as well but haven't personally experienced Princess. |

The best thing to remember is that the more you pay, the less accessable any given cruise will be to families. You'll also get better service, better amenities, and better food. Figure out where you want to go and then check out expedia - they give a rundown of who the cruise is for and who wouldn't enjoy it. And always remember that a similar option would be to go to an adult only all inclusive resort instead. Good luck in your search. : ) |
