you couldn't travel 'around the world' as most vessels traval a certain route and stick to it, but yes you can travel on some cargo ships as a paying passenger, for example i had a friend who travelled from london to asia on a car carrier, |

some merchant vessels do take paying passengers it is not as luxurious as a cruise liner but is much more fun and the service food etc is fantastic
