YES, but its very expensive. Just about all cruise ships have internet access while the ship is moving. The rates for passengers are very expensive, like about $50 an hour. But the rates for crew members are somewhat lower, how much I don't know. Even if its half the rate for passengers its still pretty expensive at $25 an hour. What I have seen crew member do, and what I usually do on cruises, is just wait until you get to a port and then you can get an internet connection that is much faster for about $5 or $6 an hour.

Yes you can use your cell phone while not in port. But again you will be paying the very expensive rates for going through the ship's satellite connection. You would eventually spend all of your earnings keeping in touch with family and friends. You would be much better doing what I have seen crew members do and that is wait until a port and then buy a phone card to call home.

Calling is expensive. For us, with ATT cellular, incoming texts were regular charge and outgoing were 50 cents...very reasonable, i thought.

Older ships do not have cell phone access once you are away from land based antennas.

Newer ships have a link on-board allowing cell phone access even in the middle of an ocean! HOWEVER they cost an arm and a leg as you are using a satellite service!

Best thing is to switch off when away from land and only switch on when moored so you use the local cell access (which is of course much more expensive using the roaming service than in your home country) only.

Moral of the story is if you have lots of friends calling up for a chat it could cost you (and them) all your wages each week!

You can use internet, im and cell phones while at sea. Certain cruise lines allow workers to have free internet during a limited time others charge a discounted rate. As for cell phones it depends on your provider and the type of phone you have as to whether it will work at sea. However using your phone at sea can be extremely expensive, sometimes $3.00 per minute.

You can use the ships internet connection. From my experience, you can not use your cell phone, but you can use the ship phone service. This is very expensive.

Navy Ships Have State Of The Art Communications Facilities Mate And I'm Pretty Sure Big Cruise Ships Will Be The Same. It's The Sort Of Thing You Can Find Out By Contacting Cruise Lines Directly And Asking For An Information Pack Before You Try Getting A Job With Them. The More You Know Beforehand The Better Prepared You'll Be For Interview! Good Luck.
