It's amazing how misinformed people are. It merely proves that the passport department is doing a poor job of letting the general public know that they keep changing the dates. (actually congress does) As of today you DO NOT need a passport. The problem is not getting into the foriegn countries, but re-enetring the United States. The requirement for sea travel has been put off to next July. Having said all that if for some reason you are stranded in a foriegn country and have to fly back into the US you will need a passport. If that should happen go the the US embassy in that country for assistance. As for getting your passport now, chances are not good, even the expedited service tends to take four weeks. Good luck and have a great cruise. |

you do not need a passport to cruise. The date you WILL need a passport is in june of 2009.
Now what you need is a certified copy of your birth certificate and Photo ID like drivers license.

You should probably contact your travel agent or Disney Cruise Lines.
Here are some helpful ideas for your cruise:

I am a travel agency owner and travel agent. You do not need a passport for a Caribbean/Bahamas cruise that leaves out of the US until June of 2009. The passport requirement for cruises out of the US was extended until June 2009. Any cruise before then, you can travel with an official birth certificate and photo ID(if you are US citezens). If you are a not a US citezen, check with your local consulate for your documentation requirements.

Where are you cruising to?
They aren't required for most cruises to the Caribbean. Why not contact your cruise line for information? |

Our family just returned from a Disney cruise to Nassau and Castaway Cay and had no problems at all with our birth certificates and state issued IDs. You will be fine if you are cruising in 2008. Have a great time and enjoy beautiful Castaway Cay! |

I just returned a little less then a week ago from a cruise that went to Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and Tortolla, although the first two are part of the US, Tortolla is British Territory. As long as you have two forms of ID, one being a picture ID you are good to go. As of January 2009 you will be required to get a passport. If you go to the US Passport website you can print of the forms, mail them in and have the passport back to you with in 1-2 weeks. My boyfriend did this and had his passport back to him in 7 days. |

I took a Carnival Cruise to Puerto Rico, The Virgin Islands, and Turks & Caicos and I had to bring my original birth certificate, social security card and pictured ID. Maybe because it's still technically in US waters, but it sufficed. |

I suggest you contact the passport office immediately! They will have the best information available and be able to give you advice you can count on.
A related item -- in the event you are indeed able to travel with a certified copy of your birth certificate and your Social Secutiry card, guard them both with your life! They are prime targets for theft, even more so than cash, since they happen to be exactly what is needed to commit identity theft! |

Birth certificate and state ID is perfectly acceptable until June 09. Customs will not give you a problem. And feel free to get off the boat in Nassau and Castaway Cay, you will not run into any problems at these locations. |

I agree with the person who suggested to contact your cruise line for more info, however, I would caution that I recently read in Conde Naste Traveller that a cruise line (Celebrity) provided the wrong information, then denied boarding and denied a refund upon arrival after an elderly couple had flown from 1/2 way around the world. The better news is that you can have passports rushed, although it will cost you more money and unless you live in a city with a passport agency (like New York or Los Angeles) you will need to use a 3rd party provider like: http://www.rushmypassport.com/?gclid=CNPNs7m_45UCFQv7agodd34LfA You can find a lot more options if you google "rush passport"-- Good Luck! |

You really should have looked into this before you bought a cruise!!!!
I know with Royal Caribbean if you are sailing OUT of the US and then sailing back INTO the US, you don't need a passport as long as you an American.
However, if you need to fly out of somewhere in case of an emergency and such you'll need a passport.
Why dont you call the Disney people and find out.
I've always just cruised with my ss card, bc and 2 ids. |
