Carnival Cruise Line? |
My husband and I are going to take our first cruise this summer. We are thinking of cruising on the Carnival Cruise Line. 7 day Western Caribbean from Tampa, FL. We are also trying to get pregnant. We have been trying for about six months. If I am pregnant by them will we still have fun? What shore excursions will we be able to participate in? What are the positives and negatives of Carnival Cruise Lines? |

First, be sure to plan your trip so you're at a point in your pregnancy where it's safe to travel (Carnival will not allow anyone over 24 weeks to board/sail). The link for the full pregnant travel detail follows...airlines also have some restrictions or may require you to have a doctors note. My doctor wrote a note for the cruise line and airport, in the event I was questioned.
I've cruised 5 times, once while RIGHT at the cut off while pregnant. It wasn't as enjoyable as my other cruises, but it was still a great time. Some excursions would not allow pregnant guests, but I still enjoyed snorkeling, catamaran rides and sight seeing.
I've traveled on Carnival twice, Royal Caribbean twice and Princess once. I enjoyed them all. RCCL took great care in customer service and keeping a clean and well kept atmosphere, catered to families. Carnival was a younger crowd - had the best food options (both the variety, hours open and inclusion of items). Princess was nice, but they seemed to nickel and dime you for everything (even charged extra for ice cream). They all had activities - all cheesy, if you ask me. :) Some had good shows.... Really, it depends more on the age of the ship and the ports. (The older ships have smaller rooms...and were more run down throughout where newer ships were more elaborate and upscale - had larger rooms/better layouts/more ammenities.)
I have always been one who battles with motion sickness...that was never too bad for me on a cruise ship, though. But I did take Dramamine to fight it off, just in case. The OB/GYN recommended to try sea bands on the cruise when I was pregnant (yeah, those didn't work and interfered with my tan), I then lessened my Dramamine dose...for obvious reasons. Well, I did get sick....but it was a rough day at sea and even some of the crew was sick. I'd try to get a ship with the least amount of 'days at sea'...that way you get a break and can get off the ship, if needed.
In all honesty, even if you're pregnant, a cruise is still a nice retreat. Yes, you won't be able to do everything that you may have hoped to do....but there are still plenty of options of things you can do. When you choose your cruise, research the options for port attractions and restrictions. Plus, getting away another time before a new addition to your family is such a good thing!
Great ports (in my opinion): Aruba (love it - lots to see, small enough to enjoy without getting lost!), Cozumel (most beautiful water I've ever seen), Bahamas (definitely check out Atlantis!), St Thomas (great for shopping, can take a water ferry to St John's for a beach day), St Kitts (monkeys on the beach!!), Barbados (beautiful beaches)....I probably could go on and on. Isla Margarita was alright...although surprised they didn't have margarita's there!! haha I hear Grenada is gorgeous with their spices and waterfalls - however, I was pregnant and stayed in town (that excursion would not allow me to go) - town was not so much fun, so I went back on the ship. :) Martinique was like a busy little city and didn't seem very tourist friendly - we should've just tried to find a beach there. Guadalupe wasn't tourist friendly at all, but I don't think many ships go there.
Best wishes to you - good luck with trying to conceive and enjoy a nice vacation away! |

I'm sure you'll have fun, pregnant or not. I'm sorry to say that there is only 1 excursion and that is an aquarium with over 4,000 fish. Aquariums are quite fun, so you could consider that. I'm not sure if there are any positives or negatives. There's just fun and more fun! So congratulations if you have a baby and ever happiness to you both! |

My family and I love cruising with Carnival. We have tried other cruise lines and they just seem to be to formal. Carnival is very casual and laid back. Sorry I can't answer the part about being pregnant, but you could always buy the insurance they offer so if you do have issues with the pregnancy or other things you can cancel and get a refund. |

Cruises have all types of fun for all tips of people. As long as you are not going for the party drinking life, you will have fun. I'm not sure if the motion sickness would be worse or what meds you could take to help it. I have always loved the Western Caribbean islands, but have always gone in the winter. Have fun, it you aren't pregnant at that point, this might be what you need to relax and get the deed done! |

Pregnamt or not you will have a fantastic time. There are so many excursions you can choose from your pregnancy will not even affect it ( I have traveled with kids and seniors so there are always many choices) I have been on both Carnival and Rcl and really enjoy the time I have spent on Carnival cruises. I have done 3 to 9 day crusies on both the Pacific and Atlantic. You wont be able to parasail or zip line but there are many things to do. Have fun, and enjoy both the cruise and the baby |
