Crime on Cruise Ships?
What would happen if a crime were committed on a cruise ship, particularly a serious crime like a murder? Are there police on board? Is there a prison or someplace where they would detain the accused? Additional Details If you can supply a source or website where you found the information, it would be much appreciated.
Ships have their own security forces and yes they would place the suspect in the 'brig' until they reached port and turned him over to the authorities. In the case of Cruise ships you are probably thinking of those that sail from the USA and the suspect would most likely be turned over to the FBI or Homeland Security. All ships have a 'brig' or jail and usually at least two cells

I think it depends on where the ship was at. If it is in the open water. It will have to be the crews to try to retain the possible suspects. But the law and justice will have to be the country which the boat/ship registered.

There are lots of security guards on board. Security is always around but are in plain clothes - guns are not visible. They are not police but are allowed to hold suspects or criminals in a secure cabin until they are taken off by police in whatever country is the next port of call.

Well, it would depend on what part of the world the crime was committed - every country has different rules. Yes, there is security on board and a place to keep the person who committed the crime - then the ship will head to the nearest port and the person would be turned over to that country's police and the investigation would begin there. The ship would also conduct their investigation and turn over the information to the police. :)

That falls under Maritime law. There should be someone onboard as an authority and at the next port of call the crime would be dealt with or the U.S coast Guard would be called in depending in which waters. Also the FBI has some juridiction too.But rest assured with home land security there maybe more than a few authorities aboard and you wouldn't know it. Same way with dealing with a detainee I'm sure they have a nice little place picked out along the way, a military base or another coutries jail. In some countries if you are detained you may wish you were in American hands.

They have their own security staff and they can hold offenders until they reach port. I have been on several cruises and felt totally safe. The worst crimes they usually deal with are people who try to cheat in the casinos.

There are security onboard all ships. There is also an area called the "brig". This is where people are kept who commit a crime. I can not send you a website that I got this information. I work for a cruise line and I have seen the brig on most of the ships in ou fleet. All cruise lines have securtiy and an brig.
