Cruise Holiday? worth it? |
I want to go on a cruise holiday, but it would just be me and my mum, whenever i've gone on holiday before (pre parents divorce) we have stayed in villas so ive never been able to socialise. But i wouldn't want to be alone on a cruise and would want to make friends, but don't know how, well i do, but I'm a bit shy. But i really want to go on a cruise?
How do you make friends on holiday?
Are cruises any good? |

It's a brilliant way to spend a holiday, we're off on our third in October and wouldn't consider holidaying any other way now. |

Cruises are great and actually cheaper then going to a hotel, going out for all your meals and renting a car too. Of course you can spend lots of money in port, but that is all up to you. The main reason I love cruising is once you are on a ship, it is completely worry free. You unpack once and let the ship take you to all the places you dream about. The only down side is you have a limited time in each port(usually 8 to 12 hours). But this gives you a pretty good feel of the port or city and just makes you want to visit again. If you are from England, there are many cruises leaving from your area. Same with Australia. Go to Princess.com for lots of cruise ideas. |

Nice idea taking you mum. She'll enjoy it to. My mum passed away 4 years ago and I value the memories of our travels to Ireland and Europe together. |

Only been on one - P & O "Oriana".
It pays to research your cruise line and ship first - check out www.cruisecritic or in your local library, borrow the Berlitz travel book "Ocean Cruising & Cruise Ships" by Douglas Ward, reputed to be the world's foremost authority on cruising.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Med jaunt on Oriana, but a friend did a similar list of venues with Costa and hated it.Some ships are adults only, some cater for young families. Get it right and you should both have a great holiday.
Our ship had a couple of single travellers' cocktail parties so that people had a chance to strike up friendships. |

Cruises are good to meet people because you "bump" into the same people all the time which makes it easier to start up a conversation. Also, you may be dining with other people and a good ice breaker is, "I've never been to (the next port)... What are you going to do there?" You say you are a little shy, but if you can step out of your shell a little bit, there may be contests and challenges on board where you may be put in the spot light or put into a team. |
