Cruise and a criminal record? |
My husband and I want to take a cruise next year to the Caribbean but he has a criminal record. It was for fraud, at least 10 years ago and he did time in jail on weekends for 8 weeks. We will be flying from Canada to Florida. Will we have an issue getting a passport and getting off the cruise at the ports of call? Additional Details I should note he has not had a pardon. |

Like Charlie pointed out and provided a great link: Get the passports, check with the US embassy if he would be considered needing a visa or not.
Unless the fraud had something to do with one of the countries you are going to, I see no problem in him getting on and off the ship at the ports of call.
Regarding Passenger ID Card: When you board a ship, you hand over your passport to the check-in personnel, and in return you get a passport receipt (a piece of paper with a number on it) and your Shipboard ID. This is a plastic card, the size of a Credit Card and is your access to the ship, your room key and your charge card all in one.
You either give the reception desk your Credit Card to swipe and then all charged you have onboard the ship will be billed to that Credit Card. Or you pay in advance, putting a deposit in Cash on your account.
Onboard the ship, you do not pay in Cash in any of the Bars or Shops or the Spa.
In the Casino, cash is accepted for chips or tokens.
Since the cruise line will keep your passport (the need that for clearance in the various ports and to produce a correct passenger list) you should have another picture ID with you e.g. your drivers license.
So when you go ashore, you need to have the picture ID and the Shipboard card with you - which also has your name printed on it - in order to leave and re-enter the ship.
Yes, the Passenger ID Card is standard by now on all the cruise lines. Yet, there is nothing you need to do. It will be prepared by the ship and handed to you when you first board. |

He should not have any trouble getting a Canadian passport. The problem will be with entering the uS. without a visa...he will most likely need to apply for a B-2 tourist visa. need to talk to nearest american consulate , rather than wait and find out the hard way. |

If he has no problems getting a passport, you won't have to worry. Nobody after that will ask any questions regarding the fraud. |

Criminal conviction does not keep one from getting the passport or passport card as long as they are not still on parole or probation. |

Ask 3 Guys
 |
Get the passport. When traveling abroad, I have never had any problems, and let's just say that there used to be a few F's on my report card of life. Got them all expunged though. But, it never once came up traveling... just voting or buying a gun.
P.S. I have been on 5 cruises. |

I can't speak on whether or not Canada will give him a passport. But when you get on a cruise ship they issue you a passenger ID card that you use to swipe on / off the ship. There are a few ports that will ask you to have a passport to reboard from shore. They are not doing background checks on you at the port and if your country issues a valid passport what would be the issue? |
