i recently was unlucky enough to be on the sea princess only to have the cruise cancelled after one night on the ship, i have had a refund and expect to get my travelling expences down to southampton re embursed but the offer of only a 25% discount from the value of the cruise off a new cruise is a little insulting, can i demand a higher discount or a financial payment if i do not wish to travel with them in the future.....

If you booked through an agent then you need to get them to write on your behalf stating that you are not happy with the offer they have given you. The cruise line will then have 28 days to respond to this letter and look into the complaint.
If they reply with another offer that you are not satisfied with then you will need to take it one stage further and write to the manager of the the cruise line. If you still dont get an outcome that you are happy with then you can contact ABTA and PSARA and see where you stand legally, they will be able to tell you where you can go from there and whether it is worth taking them to court for the moeny lost due to the cruise being cancelled.
Without knowing why the cruise was cancelled I cant offer a more indepth solution.
Best of luck and remember if you booked through an agent it is part of their job to take this up for you and to fight your corner.

TINKERTOY ..... the 1 & only
What you need to do is make a lot of noise about this. First, write a letter addressed to the company president and state your case. Tell them emphatically that the 25% offer is not acceptable and is not being accepted. Then give them a couple weeks to respond and then write again and also write to or contact your local TV station comsumer reporter and have that person get on their case. If you live in England (Southhampton I presume) then still contact the TV station in a town where princess headquarters is located, or your local consumer person. Cruise lines do not like adverse publicity and if it gets out that they are giving you and others the shaft, they will respond with a better offer.

Here's the contact info:

Princess Cruises
(Corporate Headquarters)
24844 Avenue Rockefeller
Santa Clarita, CA 91355

Princess Tours
800 5th Avenue, Suite 2600
Seattle, WA 98104-3176

write to both and then also CC the better business bureau. Like I said, make some noise.

Ask your travel agent this question. It is times like this that your agent is there to fight for you.
The answer to your question is ..
Yes.

Honestly--you need to have travel insurance. Travel insurance can get your money refunded.

However the 25% return is the standard practice in the industry. That is what is standard on the contracts. Insulting, but standard.

To them--you have received the benefits of 1) day one on board ship 2) setting sail 3) dinner that evening 4) entertainment that evening 5) cabin to sleep in 6) debarking the next day. So--keep in mind i'm not saying this is right just that this is their point of view--they are entitled to payment for all that.

Now you don't have travel insurance--what is the best you can hope for. If it was a 4 day cruise--you should get refunded 1/2 your money. Since you had day one and day 4 exactly as scheduled. If it was a 7 day, you should get 5/7 of it back. Excluding all "sails" taxes and port fees.

Now when you write your letter to the company --make sure you have several friends read it before you send it-- include that amount and your reasoning for why you find the 25% offer unacceptable. Be aware they are acting within the law, the 25% offer is industry standard and they don't have to do differently.

You can be rude about it and they will trash your letter. But if you write a polite letter, you can open up negotiations. I've had Carnival offer multiple things on my next cruise--including a Bon Voyage package, $100 Sail and Sign card credit, and a 20% reduced cost on my next cruise--for our entire party. I didn't even have anything bad happen to me but was merely informing them of the complaints others had on the cruise.

You can open the avenue to negotiation here. But yes like the prior poster said--write them a letter every 2 weeks until you have a response. Also if you paid by credit card, consider calling the credit card company (after a month) and see if they can help you. They may not be able to though.

Good luck! and remember--next time Buy Travel Insurance!

Are you saying that you got all the money back from the cost of the cruise and your travel to the cruise ship plus 25% off a new cruise with the same cruise line.....if that is the case then I think you have done rather well....snap their hands off...

Terri
You've had a refund for your cruise being canceled AND have a 25% discount for a new cruise!!!

I don't think you will get anymore compensation than you already have.

To demand for anything more than you have already gotten won't get you far.

If you do write a letter, be courteous about it. Do not DEMAND anything. Demands will get you NOwhere in a hurry. ESPECIALLY since they are already refunding you the amount of the cruise as well as giving you 25% off your next cruise with them!

Blimey! That is outrageously insulting, old bloke. Of course, you have recourse. The process is quite simple.

First, you put on your tuxedo and take tea and crumpets with the Queen and her simple-minded son, Prince Chuck. They will curtsey and waltz up to the Duke of the Exchecquer and write you a cheque for 56,000 Pounds or 36 cents (whichever is easier to understand).

Now, wasn't that easy?

In reality, you should have purchased travel insurance and you would not be asking this question.

I certainly would think that you should recive more than 25 percent off if the cruise was cancelled. What happened? I know my spouse was extrememy ill with the norovirus on board and we didn't get anything. We never made it to the dining room even once. It's not fair!! Oh and it was confirmed norovirus.
