Cruise documentation?

My mom wants to go on a cruise. She is born in China, so she moved here (USA) 25 years ago. She has an valid US Alien card (green card) and a picture NYS ID card. She is NOT a citizen, so dont advise about US passports. Can she go to cruise ships to Carribeans? I need personal experience advice rather than website links.

Why aren't you asking your travel agent and the cruise companies you are interested in? They will have reliable information. As for personal experience, here's one -- I have been at the dock at boarding time and personally seen people denied boarding due to lack of proper identification papers. No exceptions and no refund.

Johan from Sweden
Check the cruise line that you want to go with! Theyre should have rules about what id you need on theyre web pages. If theyre dont have you can email them or contact them by phone.

The rules is tightening up and from this summer every one should have a passport no matter what theyre go (with a few exceptions) and most cruise lines have this imlemated already. What I dont know is if the green card goes as a passport or not. Johan.

you need to check with the cruise line directly but i don't think she will be able to go.i just went on royal carribbean and they need an original birth certificate and a valid state id.

I am sure she is still using her Chinese passport. If the countries she will visit have reciprocity with China, then she can enter these countries without a visa for a short stay. If not, she has to apply for visas to the countries she wishes to visit. Once she has the visas, she should have no problems.

The cruise lines will tell you to call the embassy.
Check and then book with a local travel agent.
If they do the work you should be loyal.

good luck!

Here's a direct quote from Princess Cruise Line:

U.S. Resident Aliens are required to present, in addition to a valid passport, a current and valid Alien Resident Card.

most cruise lines only require basic ID's so far

First of all, if the islands are territories of the US, like Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands, then she can enter them as any citizen would. However, each port she plans to go to, it is their laws that determine how she can enter. So you would have to contact the consulate that is over each port to determine the entry requirements. You can also contact the cruise line, as they deal with this stuff all the time.

Some require that she have a Chinese Passport (she should have this anyway, perhaps it may need to be renewed) since she's a Chinese citizen, but with her greencard, they will allow her entry without a Visa. This is true for Canada, and I'm sure some other countries. If the Island does not allow for her to enter without a visa because she has a greencard, then she will need to get a visa for that territory from it's embassy/consulate. The only way to find out, is to figure out which ports she wants to visit and call the embassy or the cruise line.
