Cruise for June 2009, Should I wait for a lower price?

My fiance and I are wanting to take a cruise during the first half of June. I have talked to people who have gotten wonderful prices ($200-350) by waiting until the last minute to book the cruise and getting 'last minute' prices. we want to leave from either aNew Orleans or Mobile. How hard would it be to get a decent, oceanview room at that time? Are the only rooms available the 'last minute' terrible rooms? Would we possibly miss out on the cruise by waiting?

The risk with a June departure is June is high season because the kids are out of school and it is the early part of hurricane season.

June departures usually sell out in advance.

Jan and Feb are great months to get deep discounts. March is high season because of Spring Break.

There are some great deals right now and every week there seems to be a SALE...

The travel industry calls January Wave Month. There are many specials going on right now. If you wait til the last minute you will get stuck with the cabins no one else wants, like those next to the elevators, or under the pool, or above the night clubs. Book with an agent who will give a reduction if the cruise lines drops the price before final payment is due. Not all do this. You have to be the one that keeps track and notifies your travel agent. Try to find one that specializes in cruises.

We have just returned from an NCL cruise booked 3 weeks before departure.
We got 72% discount for a balcony cabin on www.vacationstogo.com

There is already an oversupply of cabins. This is only going to get bigger as the economy sinks and the remaining 44 ships on order arrive over the next 4 years!

If you are flexible about where from/exact date/length of trip you will get a bargain.

My girlfriend and I are traveling Carnival in about 3 weeks out of New Orleans. We booked it at the end of August, and our room (oceanview) is right around $300/person. We decided to go with the 'carnival assigned' room, and they automatically put us in the 6D category room. This is our first cruise. I don't know if you can find cheaper through a travel agent or not...we booked directly through Carnival. But from what I have heard from former travel agents, no matter what room you're assigned to, keep calling to see if you can get your room upgraded (I think this is only really the case if you're assigned a room). It can't hurt.
