Cruise holiday? |
In may I am going on my first ever cruise on the new P&0 ship the Ventura. Im going with my parents and younger brother and none of us have cruised before. There are 3 formal nights during our time on ship. What does that actually mean and how should I dress for them. Also what do you wear in the evening on the non formal nights. I am really looking forward to the holiday but am a little concerned that we will all stand out by not dressing right.
Thanks in advance for your help

From the website.
Formal
This is the opportunity for ladies to wear formal evening wear such as a ball gown, trouser suit or a cocktail dress. For men, a dinner jacket or tuxedo are the norm, otherwise a dark suit and tie or even a kilt and jacket is fine.
Semi-formal
Ladies can wear anything from tailored trousers to smart separates or an elegant dress, while men can wear a jacket and tie. However, smart shirts that do not require a tie are also acceptable when worn with a linen jacket or blazer.
Smart casual
Stylish resort or leisurewear is ideal, for example casual separates, dresses or smart jeans for ladies and openneck shirts, polo shirts and trousers or smart jeans (not shorts) for men. Men are not required to wear jackets on Smart Casual nights. We would request that sportswear, (e.g. trainers, tracksuits and football shirts) are not worn in the evenings.
You will have a great time, enjoy it. |

For formal nights, women "should" wear a long "party" dress, or a very dress pants outfit [e.g. black dressy pants + sparkly top], or a cocktail dress. For teens, you could wear a very nice "going to church" dress. Men wear a tux or a suit and tie.
For non-formal nights, this will depend on the ship. [Go to the website of your cruise line - it should spell out there what the different levels of dress are.] If you have "informal" dress, then women would wear a dress or nice pants outfit and men would wear a jacket and tie; "casual" or "resort casual" would mean sundress or pretty pants outfit for women and a polo or button-up shirt and khaki pants [or similar] for men.
I've found the best thing to do to avoid having to bring a lot of "formal" wear is to bring a long black skirt or dressy pants and however many tops I need for the number of formal nights. Or you could wear a slinky, long, black tank-type dress with different dressy little jackets.
Most cruise lines are not really strict about these guidelines, as long as you don't try to wear jeans/tees/shorts/flip-flops to dinner. |

For my last cruise I bought cocktail dresses from a supermarket, flimsy material and only 18 quid each. The quality is that of a dress about 70 quid.
The formal nights aren't like they used to be whereby the captain has dinner with the passengers. he just comes out on a balcony and welcomes everyone, you can either go or not.
I took 5 evening wear for a 12 day cruise and after five eves, I wore the first one again and so on. Mainly you can wear whatever you wish, as you would going to a local restaurant on a nice summer eve, Through the day just shorts or cut-offs and a T-shirt/sleeveless top.
Lots of the passengers still had shorts/cut offs in the eve. Anything goes. |

Lucky you. We go on Princess Cruisers in August. You will thoroughly enjoy the experience. You will be spoiled rotten, and waited upon hand and foot. Once cruised, and you are hooked! Non- formal nights, means just that. Smart casual, easier for a lady that a man, I would think ( says he putting his head in the noose!). Formal for a man is evening suit, black tie, etc. For the lady, pull out all the stops, long dress, new hair-do. The works. Go for it, girl. You will love it. You will only stand out by being the smartest around. But do not overdo it. If you are English, you will know what I mean. If not, then cool it, and keep it simple. |

So i sleep a lot

My wife and I arrived back last Friday from a two week cruise, our first. We now know we will never go back to usual holidays and its true you get hooked.Waking up to a new destination and tour is great. My thoughts were a bit like yours for eating but I think most of that is in the distant past.We had a Captain's photograph,my wife wearing black trousers and blouse, myself black pants and shirt. The majority were dressed this way,it was odd to see suite's and ties, don't think I saw any.But in dining nobody wore shorts etc but were sensable. So many things to see and do so enjoy,we really did,and from what I saw,so did the people your age.PS you will always find the odd long term tut tut cruiser ,take no notice |

formal generally means a dress for a female. Generally dress as if your going to court or for an interview and you will get it right. |

Formal nights are fun. I'm a 17 year old and I thought I would hate them, but getting dressed up and having your picture taken is more fun than you'd think.
A dress is expected for a girl, and you may want to talk to your parents to see what they are wearing.
Have fun, after formal night dinner you can go party with all the other dressed up teens... some of the best partying you'll ever do |
