A lot of the ones on the cruiseline are the same you would get if you booked independently, except the cruiseline is more expensive. The biggest advantage of booking with the cruiseline is that if the excursion runs late or beyond the leaving time from port, they will hold the ship until the excursion returns. Booking independently means you are out of luck.

The cruisecritic message boards have a lot of information and reviews about the independent tour providers on the islands. I would suggest reviewing the boards to find out which ones are most reputable.

Who did you book your cruise through? Whoever you did that w/ i would do it through them. They can give you a list of all the excursions. If not, than you can wait until you are on the cruise and they will give you a thing w/ all the excursions and then you can pick.

My advice would be to book through the cruise line, either before or on the ship (but as someone said the good ones go first). If you do not arrive back at your ship on time it will leave without you, definitely! If you are booked on one of the cruise line's trips, however, they will wait for you (they usually send a rep on each trip and they can be in contact with the ship if you are held up for whatever reason). When you go to St. Lucia do the Souffre Piton trip - ours returned us by catamaran (with rum punch) so we went all around the Pitons. Awesome.

go to the cruise line website and browse through it,
you should eventually find the thing for excursions, it will tell you to look by location, so choose your locations and try to go for a good one
with cruise excursions you really do get what you pay for.
if there is a 20 dollar one, it really can't be that good.
don't be afraid to spend a bit on the excursions if you can, because some of them are completely amazing.
don't wait until you get on the ship to book them, the good ones go fast.

They don't want to give too much info because they then have to live up to the hype. Over the years I've found many excursions are less than advirtised. But as long as you book through the ship, the ship can not leave if the excursion is late getting back to the ship.(tour bus breaks down etc.) If you just go off on your own and are late getting back the ship is not required to wait for you.
As far as specific excursions you need to tell us what cruise your on, what island and what excursion and I'm sure many people would be glad to give a thumbs up or down.
On the whole I enjoy cruises, and when we find a substandard excursion, If you push it, the cruise line will refund money for a bad tour. If you just go ashore and go on a trip you are on your own!

you can book your own, or generally when you get off the ship at most islands, independent excursion vans are there. Keep in mind though, if you go on a cruise ship excursion the ship will wait for the excursion party if its late. You can take an independent excursion, but if they are late the ship will sail without you.

Book your own.
Research what you want to do, starting from local tourist board sites.
We mix hiring a local guide with other trips just hiring a car and taking a taxi from the ship to the rental office, sometimes they even pick you up!
Cruise line excursions are poor quality, overpriced and you miss what YOU want to see!
