Cruise safes on Carnival cruise lines????

I am going on my first cruise this summer and I am worried about the safes in the rooms. I was told never to bring your passport ashore when you get to the ports. Is that true and if so would my Drivers License and passport be ok in the safe. I would think that you should have that at all times but I guess if someone decides to take my purse while ashore then I would be out of luck. Also do you think that the room maids have access to all the safes? Any suggestions are appreciated.

If you have your Cruiseline I.D, that should be good enough. But call the cruiseline and ask that question, some ports may require that you have your passport and other ports you can use your cruiseship I.D card.

On the Carnival cruise I was on there was a small safe in the room that you locked by using a credit card. The same card would unlock it. No one can get into the safe but you and security.

Many people may say otherwise but I advise carrying a passport when in any foreign country. If the ship leaves without you for any reason you will not be able to fly without one.

I would take copies of your passport, another picture ID (your drivers license) and your Passenger ID card ashore with me - and leave the Passport in your safe in the room.
Depending where your cruise goes to - you need to hand in your passport to the Purser's department anyway - and you will only get your passport back before disembarking.

The room stewards do not have access to your safe.

Hi ,
Carnival Cruise.....
'It would depend on what countries you are cruising to.
I went to Europe and all passports were collected once on board.
I took copies of mine and carried them with me when I went ashore.
Take care when in port with your bag.
We had a safe in our room and we entered our own security number I am not sure if all cruises have the same.
I would check it when you do a search of the cruise ameneties.
No problems with anything missing or privacy while on board

You must carry your driver's license with you. A photo id and your ship card is required to get back on board. Plus if you buy anything expensive, most check your id to run your credit card.

However everyone is right about only the credit card used to open the safe can unlock it--no maids have access.

Unless you are swimming however, carry one of those against your body things to keep your passport in. I have a lanyard that I keep inside my shirt with my driver's and ship card in it. I carry a very small purse with a long strap going across my body with my wallet in it. However I recommend carrying a different wallet on vacation. Just have your primary credit card, perhaps a secondary if something goes wrong that you leave in your room safe. Sometimes the credit card gets magnetized or the fraud department gets scared that one purchase was in Miami, the next in Puerto Rico and the next in Mexico so they turn off your card. You'll want a backup.

Leave at home everything else. You don't need your credit cards to every department store, your gift cards to restaurants, your SS card, etc. So don't even carry those. It's just yet another hassle if something where to happen.

Every cruise that I have been on, including carnival, has a safe. You choose your own code for the safe, so the room attendant would not have access to it. At many ports you do have to bring your passport off the ship and show it when coming back onto the ship to security. You also have to bring your ship card.

You should call Carnival and ask them. If they don't have one in the room - they will have one at the front desk that you can use. What do you want to put in there other than your passport? If you are going to any country (including Mexico now) you will need your passport to get back on the ship. So, you can't put it in the safe. If you are going to an island that you don't need a passport - then don't even take it. For example - if you are going to Key West then you don't need the passport and leave it at home.

If you do need it. Make a copy of the passport and leave the copy in your stateroom as a "just in case" situation. If for some reason it is stolen - chances are that Carnival will still let you back on with your picture ID and assist you in claiming it stolen. I mean, they certainly are not going to leave you in that country.

As for the maids having access to the safes - no they do not. Only the front desk does. And anyhow - the "stewards" (not maids) are very courteous and trustworthy. Now - do not recommend you leaving your $12,000 Rolex laying around??? .. maybe not. But, I would not worry about your passport or other valuable things. I have been on about 25 cruises and never one time had an issue with anything going missing. And, I have left my diamond necklace out.. still there when I got back.

Have fun and stop worrying! This is supposed to be fun.. not stressful.
