On June 1, 2009 all cruise passengers will be required to possess a passport unless on a closed loop cruise (see below). Prior to that date if you are only traveling to and from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda you only need documentation as indicated in the closed loop rules below. Travel to all other countries requires a passport.
U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises (cruises that begin and end at the same port in the U.S.) will be able to enter or depart the country with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. A U.S. citizen under the age of 16 will be able to present either an original or a copy of his or her birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by DOS, or a Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Please be aware that you may still be required to present a passport when you dock at a foreign port, depending on the islands or countries that your cruise ship is visiting. Check with your cruiseline to ensure you have the appropriate documents for the stops you’ll be making on your cruise.
Even though a passport is not required I would highly recommend one. If you get stuck in a foreign country without one you can't fly home. The passport cards that are being issued as an alternative to the passport book will not allow you to fly.

you will need either a passport or passport card (card is only good for land and sea travel, not air). in order to get either of these items you will need to show your birth certificate, your identification, fill out an application, have a passport photo taken (to meet the specifications), and pay either $100 for a first time passport or $45 for the passport card. Take a look at the passport website for more information. |

In the past you didn't need once for a cruise to the Caribbean, but I am pretty sure they were changing that. I'm just not sure when...
Your best bet is to just call a travel agent or the cruise line directly to find out. |

Depends on when your going. I think June 1 of this year you will need a passport to travel to the Caribbean by ship. If I were you I would have it to be on safe side in case of emergencies. You do need one if you have to take a plane. |

Yes, you do. I just got back. It depends where in the Caribbean you are traveling to. If it is a US Territory - like Puerto Rico -then No. If it is Mexico, etc - then YES!!!
If you are not sure - call your cruise line and they will be able to tell you. But, you should get one anyways. You never know when you will need it again and they don't expire for about 10 years.
Have fun! |

No & Yes. Since you need to bring some identities, why not bring a passport. |

Yes you won't be able to get on the ship without it. Plus you will need the number off it to fill in the forms. |

as long as you are back and forth from the same US port. |

You do need a passport if you are leaving US waters. NO if and or butts.
You can not get back into the United States with out one. |

I believe it will be required for you to board the ship, yes. Usually a cruise involves docking at a number of stops and disembarking for a number of hours sight seeing etc. |

No, but you may need your birth certificate.
Just call the cruise line and they can tell you. |

Nope, But when you applying for the cruise, they require passport. |
