Cruising during hurricane season, Let's hear your horror stories & some stories from the opposite spectrum

Im planning on going on a cruise next july 22nd 2007. I am wondering what happens if there is a warning like there is now for the Carribean (where we plan on going...jamaica). Let me hear what you got. Thanks in advance!

I have booked cruises during the last 3 hurricane seasons. The one in july went off fine, the one in oct went fine. I did get caught up in the Katrinia thing last year. Basically if there is a hurricane that looks like it will hit your embarkment port, they will eithor move the ship to another port or in rare cases cancel the cruise. If the hurricane looks like it will hit the ports that you are planning to visit, they will eithor just skip them or reroute the ship to other ports. The only pita thing about this is that you usually don't find out till the last minute. If your are planning on cruising during july, there is a 99% chance that you will be fine. However it is wise to purchace travel insurance which will cost you around $50 for a couple.

I cruise often, mostly in the hurricane season (Prices are better). I have never had a bad experience. Sometimes a little choppy but not bad. With all the weather forecasting advances in the past years, cruise ships can tell where a hurricane is heading and choose a different destination.

I have sailed out of FLA and NYC to the Caribbean and Bermuda (Yes - through the “triangle”) with no problems.

A few years ago, I went on a Caribbean cruise about a week after a very bad hurricane. The ship was rocking quite a bit and I got a little sea sick, but that's as bad as it got. I heard the waves were 14 - 20 feet.

I have just booked a cruise for two weeks later and it is hurricane season. However, I asked the travel agent about this and he said that you don't have to worry a lot about it. The reason is that, if a hurricane strikes the port, what they do is the usually move the port to another location (or cancel the cruise--very rarely happening; in fact, the travel agent told me that it's never happened before). If the hurricane is still at sea, the ships (which have radars) move to avoid the hurricane (they can do this because they actually travel faster than wind).

In general, you only have to worry if the hurricane strikes the shore, which doesn't happen frequently. I'd certainly book for this time because it offers the lowest prices of the year. *Very* significant reductions in price

I'm not sure about cruising during a hurricane, but I was once stuck on a scientific research vessel in the Gulf and had to try and outrun one, and another time (more recently) my wife and I got stuck at Disney World in Orlando when Jeanne hit.

The experience at Disney was really very nice...all things considered, that is. Naturally, we had to stay in out hotel (one on the Disney property) for like 24 hours...BUT, Disney turned on all of their movies channels for free, had regular patrols of employees knocking on our door to make sure we were okay, and even stocked us up before the storm with lots of bagged food, water bottles, and batteries and a flashlight. We bought a couple of pizzas and some cokes and coffee, and well, just sat back while the storm raged furiously by outside. All of our park passes were "comped" for an extra day, and frankly, we had a nice trip. Getting on a flight home however was a freaking nightmare, but even that was eventually handled in a reasonable amount of time. Disney is truly ready for anything; hat's off to them!

Depends on the strength of the hurricane. if it is a cruise I am sure they will change course to get out of the way. If it is a weak one they would probable just stop somewhere. If that is the case, then get some Rollerblades. Rollerblading in weak hurricanes and tropical storms is awesome.
