Tell me, what is your point?
Is this just scare mongering on your part?
I've been on 32 cruises and nothing of note has happened. Yes, people have died. I was on a cruise last month and 2 people died. Both natural causes. I've been a cruise were 7 people died, all natural causes.
Yes, there are bad things out there...but bad things happen everywhere. At any one time, there are probably 100,000 people on cruise ships around the world. Actually it's probably a lot higher than that. And statistically, you are probably just as likely to be stuck by lightning then you are to have a crime committed against you on a cruise ship. This link you provided lists 50 "victims" although I am sure many died of natural causes or were in no way the fault of the cruise line. But again, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say 50 in the last 2 years or so.
And again, using very rough estimated math...we'll say 100,000 people cruise per week...52 weeks in a year, 5.2 million people per year...your stats go back to 2006...so 2 years...10.4 million people have cruised in the last 2 years.
50 incidents in the last 2 years with 10.4 million people cruising...that means you stand a .00000048076923 of a crime happening to you on a cruise ship.
The majority of people going overboard on cruise ships can be attributed to one of two things...suicide or people having too much to drink and doing really stupid things. I especially don't feel sorry for the latter group.
And of those things that are listed on that page, how many of them are a direct result of negligence on behalf of the cruise line? How many of those deaths did the cruise line directly cause?
When you wake up in the morning, you are putting your life in your hands. Everything you do, you put your life in your hands...but you not saying anything about those other things. Why?
You're no more likely to be raped on a cruise ship, then you are on land. SARS and bedbugs are no more likely on a cruise ship then they are on land.
Your argument really has no merit, and neither do you.
Edit: Actually the deaths on ships thing goes back to 99, so the odds are even less that you would be the victim of a crime on a cruise ship. |

People die on planes, in cars and everywhere else. Many people who cruise are elderly so the no. of deaths on cruise ships is bound to be higher than on other forms of transportation. I have been on 8 cruises and there has never been a death on board any of them.
It is ridiculous to blame the cruise lines for natural deaths. |

You are more likely to win the lottery and get hit by a car on the same day than die on a cruise ship. |

You realize that you could come up with similar scare reports concerning just about everything else on the planet. You just take the worst cases and make them sound common place. This isn't the norm. This isn't common place.
Cruises are a blast and you watch way too much TV. |

my fiance and i are looking at cruises for our honeymoon. and even reading this site doesnt really disuade me from wanting to go. im more concerned about the kidnappings and missing people from carrbiean islands and mexican cities.
this site is good at least to see which cruise lines have the most disasters...if the site is actually true |

You forgot jerks that tryes to scare people from cruising.
Crusing is one of the safest forms of holidays but obviously youre on a ship on the sea so there are risks if youre dont use common sence.
Cruise lines cares about theyre passangers and wouldnt go to any infected port. But ofc people an get infected in all areas and hot climate destinations has its risks. But that risks is larger if you stay on a hotel in that area.
As for pirates, modern cruise ships are huge and loaded with thousends of people and a crew of hundreds. More than a match for a dozen or so pirates in rubber craft, dont you think?
As for going unreported, do you think that any accident in the cityes nightclub reaches the public? Or any car accident for that matter?
Ofc there is risks if you walks on the handrails and disobeys "staff only"/"off limits" signs but its not riskier than walking on the higway with youre eyes closed and its as stupid.
Overall cruising is one of the safest and most price value forms of holiday imaginable. Staff are friendly and there to service you as long as you use common sence and dont drink to much. Johan. |

Well, if you never check the local newspaper, don't watch the local news or listen to the local radio, you might not realize that the ATM you use late at night, has had armed robberies there recently, one right after you left yesterday.
Don't you think, if you knew that news, your might find another ATM, visit the bank inside during the day, or skip the ATM altogether for a while? Knowledge is power.
We have newspapers, magazines, television news, radio stations and yes the internet to communicate not only the good but the bad things that go on in life as well. It is our quest for knowledge, and an active effort to increase brain mass, that seperates us from lower species.
Web sites that collect nitch data, good, bad or both, as they choose, do so because there is a strong need by the public to know that particular twist to the topic. Not everybody throws caution to the wind, flies by the seat of their pants, and takes the hits as they may come. We have free will, and those with a reasonable amount of IQ exercise it through the use of knowledge.
Some of us actually, do put our money away before we leave the bank, instead of pinning it to our shirt, along with the sign that says, "I'm stupid, victimized me." Victimization isn't just about stupidity, it is about being in the wrong place at the wrong time. If that place has a history of being wrong, this is where intelligence comes in, you avoid it. You can only do that, if you know the problem exists.
When we decide as a society, that knowledge about crimes is a bad thing, we might as well end the judicial system as a whole because nobody cares if they become a victim or not. Just leave the door wide open at night when you go to bed, and roll the dice.
That serial killer on the loose in your neighborhood, might just pass you by, because your flagrant ignorance of his history, says your head is so far in the ground, he couldn't find it to chop it off if he wanted to.
The odd thing about the tired old mantra of "crimes are everywhere", is it pushes people to believe, they don't need to worry about being victimized, because those things happen rarely and therefore are not worth the time to consider.
Yet, these same people, locked the door before they left home, locked the car door and set the alarm on it, in order to protect their possessions. Why? Because they have the knowledge that if they leave the car in the parking lot with the windows rolled down, and the door to the house wide open when they left for the cruise, they would come back to nothing.
Under those circumstance, how can they rationally take shots at people who don't just worry about their car and house, mere material possessions, but actually worry about the personal safety of their body, and those they love?
The keyword in that paragraph is "rationally".
What I hear here, is there is one poster, who has "stalked" the original poster, to three or more posts, and has harrassed that OP at each opportunity. With that kind of behavior on the pro-cruise industry side of the word war, the industry doesn't need any more friends.
Their "friends" are doing more damage to their reputation than any little web site publisizing the bad things that happen. We have a real live, living and breathing example of a stalker who is also a cruiser. Take a good look. It doesn't get any more real that this. |

Wow.... you're really against cruises....
All I can say is that you can get everything (except maybe falling overboard) on any vacation.... Crime is all over the world. Same goes for hygiene issues. You can go to a hotel and they could have bed bugs.....
I guess for you... just stay home. I for one will take my chances and enjoy my cruise in March. :-) I'm going with my family, so I know I'm safe. My parents will be there and my husband, who is in the military. Believe me.... no one would want to lay a finger on me. :-) I'm also no going to go any where without him. Dinner... check.... tours... check.... AND, about the only real precaution I am taking is to switch my purse from the one that goes on my shoulder to one that crosses my body. That way I have no worries of anyone trying to take it off my arm AND both of my hands are free to tour and play. :-) |
