I have done the train from civitivechia its about an hour train ride to the vatacian and its about 9 euros round trip. and the secenery is nice.

I guess the dock would be in Civitavecchia? Best to take the train from Rome to the dock again. I believe it takes about one hour maximum. Taking a taxi back it too expensive and you don't want to end up in a traffic jam and miss the ship.
