Do Cruise Ships Feel to over crowded when you are on them?

We are going on a cruise in the summer and its our first time and we have alot of questions but, this is one that is kind of most on our mind.

I have been on many crises (20+) and also on the largest cruise ship afloat, the Freedom of the Seas which hold 3000 passengers. There are some times when you feel the crowds; like when you get in line to board the ship the first time; when you gather at the designated places to go on tours or activities off the ship; and maybe when at the end of the cruise when its time to get off the ship. BUT, as a general rule you do not feel crowded on ship at all. The ships are so large and there are so many things to do that you see people coming and going but there is always a place where you can go and not be in a crowd or even be alone. The most crowded place on ship is usually around the pool area. The interesting thing is the pool area may be very crowded but if you go forward or back just a little there will be places for sunning and/or relaxing that are completely empty. Another interesting thing is that after 3 or 4 days on ships you will see people whom you have never seen on the ship before; and you wonder where have they been.

we went on a cruise with over 4,000 people. and you couldn't tell there were that many. except when you were getting off the boat but then it still didn't feel like there were that many people.

Nope. I went on a 'smaller' ship. It was crowded on embarkation, and that's about it. For lunch at the buffet, you wait in line for about 5 minutes...that's the most of the crowd you'll really experience. The main ballroom for the shows gets full, but it never feels crowder per se. Only when everyone is leaving.

If you want to lay out next to the pool during the day, I'd get there fairly early so you secure a chair (around 9-10 AM. A lot of people steal a lot of chairs)

That hasn't been my experience and I've taken several. Much depends on what your preferences are as in whether you prefer a small ship or large ship and what time of day you enjoy dinner, etc. Generally, its a city afloat and there is much to do and plenty of space to do it in.
Certain events might be heavily attended like the Ice Carving Gala at the Midnight Buffet or a dance party or festival event.

Not at all I didn't even pass by the same people too often. Only time it felt over crowded was getting on and getting off the ship.

Time travler
No, not at all. While you wait in line to get on the ship at first, then yes and if you do lunch at 12 in the buffet, then that can be crowded, but for the most part, it feels more like how it is at a mall during the week. Not bad at all.
