Do cruise gratuities have to be the exact amount as the suggested guidelines? |
I'm going on Royal Carribbean and in their handbook they give suggested guidelines for gratuities and they pretty much amount to 9.75pp/day and 48.75pp for 5 days. Are you required to give that exact amount 48.75 and are you required to give at least 3.50 to the dining room waiter, and 2.00 to the asst. waiter, and .75 to the head waiter, and 3.50 to the stateroom attendent, like it says? I know you can give more if you want but can you give less? I'm not trying to be cheap or anything but I was wondering how that works. |

They are called guidelines, and are exactly that, just guidelines. There is no law that you must pay those amounts. I think it's ridiculous that they state an amount at all, either the people do a good job for you and you reward them for it, or they don't, in which case you give less or nothing. I wouldn't be intimidated by this guideline garbage. Since they pay crappy wages they think they can make up for it by doing this. Ridiculous ! But.... on the other side of the coin ( ha ha ) Europeans are known for being very stingy or non existent tippers, so maybe it is only in the handbook for Europeans that this is written.... |

I usually round up.
For example...
Room Attendant and Waiter are $3.50 per day...which comes out to $24.50 for each of them...So..$25 for each
Assistant Waiter...$2.00 per day...or $14.00 for a week...so $15.00
Head Waiter....$.75 per day...or $5.25 for the cruise...I usually round this down to $5.
It just makes life simpler. Not to mess with the ones and with change.
You can give less, but really...it's not that big of an expense. After the first two days, your bar bill will be far more than the gratuity amount. |

Most lines now add it to your on-board bill "for your convenience" as a rounded up figure for all the staff.
It is a compulsory discretionary bill!!!!!! |
