On June 1, 2009 all cruise passengers will be required to possess a passport unless on a closed loop cruise (see below). Prior to that date if you are only traveling to and from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda you only need documentation as indicated in the closed loop rules below. Travel to all other countries requires a passport.
U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises (cruises that begin and end at the same port in the U.S.) will be able to enter or depart the country with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. A U.S. citizen under the age of 16 will be able to present either an original or a copy of his or her birth certificate, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by DOS, or a Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Please be aware that you may still be required to present a passport when you dock at a foreign port, depending on the islands or countries that your cruise ship is visiting. Check with your cruiseline to ensure you have the appropriate documents for the stops you’ll be making on your cruise.
Even though a passport is not required I would highly recommend one. If you get stuck in a foreign country without one you can't fly home. The passport cards that are being issued as an alternative to the passport book will not allow you to fly.

As of March 2009, you do not need a passport to cruise to the Bahamas as long as:
It is a closed loop cruise meaning that you depart from and return to the same port.
You have a government issued photo ID with birth date, such as a state issued driver's license.
You have an original or notarized copy of your birth certificate indicating that you were born in the U.S.
As of June 1, 2009 EVERYONE planning to travel outside of the US will require a passport, whether by land, air or sea. |

no.but if you get really sick(mumps, chicken pox;stuff like that)while your down there than you can't leave the country until you get better...
i went to bahamas before and all i needed was a birth certificate(i was 12)...but when i got back a few months later they changed the rules...but i doubt you'd catch something and have to stay.what are the odds, right?lol |

When I went on a cruise to St Thomas, St Martin and the Bahamas, we needed passports both to get on the cruise (because it will be leaving the country and heading to another) and to get on and off. If you live in Canada and are taking a plane to a US cruise ship, you will also need one to board the plane. I would recommend getting one just in case - when I got mine, it only took about four weeks to send to me. Try to get one as soon as possible -- it's better not to take any risks and avoid ruining your trip!
Best of luck! |
