They will work when you're in port, but when you're at sea it will only work if the ship has a satillite that it can link you up to (you then get charged a fortune!!!) - modern ships tend to have them but older ships probably wont - what ship are you travelling on?

Yes, they work at first. But once you get out in sea and into international waters, you will need to use your international feature on your phone. I actually had to call my cell co. ahead of time to plan for this so we could call our kids at home. It does cost money per min, but gives you access instead of no signal. You give them the start and end date of your cruise so that you have access to using this feature while asea. It's like tapping into other satellites instead of your own, so you pay extra.

Miller_Fan_2
You can use it on most newer ships. You will have to pay more.

Some ships now have the ability to handle cell phone calls. Check with the cruise line to see if they have it. Check with your phone company about the charges. The ship will not charge for the call. Your phone company will treat it as an international call and charge you their rates. It will still be much cheaper than using the telephone supplied in your room.

their are no cell towers in the ocean so prolly not.
could work if your near the shore line where their are towers.
cruise ships should have phones on them that u can use, and they work by satilite.

Most older ships don't once you are out of sight of land (i.e.) not in reach of a cell station. They really want you to use their satellite phones (arm and a leg cost).

Newer ships now have a satellite link for most mobiles even in the middle of nowhere. BUT this costs the cruise line so therefore you are going to pay for the service!

HOWEVER the cost is horrendous! So keep your phone switched off (unless expecting an emergency) until you dock at the next port and are picking up "land" communications once again.

Ask your cruise line about the actual ship you are going on and if your mobile provider is covered - and ask for charges if they say, yes you can!

spunky96
Some cruise lines DO provide you with satellites so you CAN use your cell phones while on board and at sea. My kids kept in touch with me via text messages from our their cell phones while on board a royal caribbean cruise last year. The cell phones worked well while we were out at sea and docked in port. Check with your cruise line about cell phone usage and check with your cell phone service provider for any charges or fees that you may have to pay so you are well aware of what you will be billed later on.

They doo, But Inside The Ship The Signal Isnt Very Good, So Go Out Onto The Decking And It Should Work! :) x

melisa1211
Yea.. Before you leave the port..it probally would. After you are away from last A.K.A in the middle of nowhere.. Dont expect to call someone.

biff
not while you are at sea, you can sometimes use you phone when in port, no signal at sea

No unless it is a Satellite Phone don't worry they would have phone on board plus (if bigger enough) computers as well
you won't get reception in the middle of nowhere

i depends the type of your phone

They work only when you are at a port or very near a port. They DO NOT work while you are out at sea. Internet service does work though.
