NO!! NO! No!. The rules on passports were supposed to go into effect this summer with a passport being required for all cruise travel. But the Department of Homeland Security has revised the time schedule for requiring passports and now everyone has until next summer to get a passport for cruise travel. Currently all that is required is a copy of your birth certificate and a photo ID.
Some cruise line will strongly suggest that you get a passport and you should if you have time before your cruise (it takes about 4 to 6 weeks). But as long as you have the birth certificate and other ID you will be OK. |

The Dept of State has issued a new 1/2 passport for Canadian, Mexican, and Caribbean travel. It is called the passport card. It costs about half of what a full passport costs, but ulitmatly you will need to check with your cruise provider. |

Yes, as of June 1, 2008 I believe is became affective. We went in January and found our passports handy even then. Take them with you even if you are told that you can re board with only your ship "card" because in some ports, the port authority will stamp your passport. It is a souvenir that costs you nothing!
Also, if you are only planning on going on a cruise that leaves from a United States border, you may want to consider a "passcard". It is cheeper, easier to carry with you, but you can't get it stamped. |
