Do you guys think that it is a good deal to buy cruise insurance?

Depends on how comfortable you are with risk, and how likely you think you are to have a problem.

For me, I'm young and healthy and so are all my family members so I don't think a medical emergency would stop me from getting to the ship. As for missing a flight, I usually give myself plenty of time, so that risk is low too.

Sure, there's always a chance something bad could happen -- big storms, many flights canceled, etc. -- but for me I'm OK to risk it. If insurance costs $300 and the cruise costs $3000, then the insurance would have to be used at least one out of ten times to make it worthwhile.

All that said, my aunt really likes the peace of mind of having insurance.

Definitely, if your going on a cruise you have to make the ship. Anything can happen with air travel these days, if you don't make the pier when the ship embarks they are not going to wait for you.
You're more or less in a foreign country on a cruise ship. You stop at little Caribbean islands that probably have diseases. The insurance is not expensive, I think it is a good investment.

I think it is. I have a few times were cruise insurance has came in handy because of stuff that was completely out of my control. I went with family and we were all healthy and on a cruise I doubt any of us would get more then the occasional sea sickness. Anyhow, we always go down the day before. However, that doesnt always work in your favor. One year, we had an 11 AM flight that got canceled due to a snow storm, and it got bumped to a 7 am flight. That flight ended up sliding off the runway mid take off. Then we got put on a 4 PM flight, which left two hours late because the crew ran out of de-icer and it took forever for them to coat the plane with that stuff. We ended up almost missing our connecting flight to our destination, but thankfully there were enough of us on our flight, that they waited. We finally arrived at 1 Am that next morning, and ended up losing our garmet bag. We ended up receiving our bag later that night after it being rushed to our ship. We were also very experienced cruisers but unfortunately this happened. Thats why I never go without insurance.

We have done almost 20 cruises and we usually only buy insurance when we are leaving from a port outside the US. I would also consider getting travel insurance if my travel included an airline connecting flight, like across country, to get to the port. I generally use Travelux; the web site is below. I have also included a web site where you can shop for travel insurance. These insurance brokers generally cover everything from missed flight or ship connections to medical problems, to terrorism.

I would also get insurance if I was cruising in the Caribbean during the hurricane season, June through the end of October.
We have done cruises departing from Barcelona, Spain and Dover, England and we purchased insurance because of the flights and because we were sightseeing by train before the cruise. We purchased insurance (not through the cruise line) because there were several points where we could miss a flight, train, or ship and/or lose luggage.

A couple years ago we went on a cruise to the Baltic out of Dover, England and we bought travel insurance and it paid off. The cruise ship was forced to come back to a port other than Dover because of bad weather and I ended up filing a claim for missed train connections. The insurance I bought covered the flight, trains and cruise for one price.

One other thing you should consider along with whether to buy insurance is going to (or near) the cruise port city a day early so that you do not miss your cruise because of a flight delay.

Absolutely. Look back a couple of days ago for a question from a person whose parents missed their cruise and now want Carnival to refund their money - no way! Make sure your insurance covers missing the boat, etc.

Of course, if you don't mind risking the money you're spending on your vacation, then you don't need insurance.

It will give you peace of mind. For instance earlier today someone made a post about there parents missing a cruise because there driver got lost. They are out $3,000 unless they bought insurance. Cruise insurance is not much money and I usually by it because, well, you never know. The last cruise I went on I almost did not make it because my passport got lost on the plane. Luckily it was found 2 flights later, thank God.

You must weigh out the risk vs return. Consider these things before deciding:

How much do I have to lose?
How much does insurance cost?
How much does it cover?
What if I get stranded?
What if I lose my stuff?
Can they be replaced easily?

This should help you choose one way or another. Depending on how much the insurance costs... which isn't usually much... it may be afforadable peice of mind.

I purchased uhaul insurance which only costs a couple of dollars - which if you get in any sort of accident you'd have to pay in the tens of thousands range.

I think its worth it if you REALLY want to relax on your cruise... heck you probably paid a lot more just deciding to go on the cruise.
