yes

Not in 2007. The passport requirement for 2007 applies only to air travel.

The passport requirement for for land and sea takes effect in 2008.

Refer to notices posted at:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

Julie T... gave a great reference to answer this question.

As of yesterday 1/23, a passport is required for all travel outside of the U.S. by air.

To travel on a cruise you can still provide a CERTIFIED copy of your birth certificate (no photocopies allowed) and a state issued picture ID. Beginning in January of 2008, you will need a passport to take a cruise.

There is an initiative in the works to require those who cruise (travel by sea) or travel out of the country by car to obtain a PASSCARD. The passcard will be a credit card size version of a passport. It will also be about half the cost of a passport. This initiative is slated to begin January, 2008 or earlier. The site Julie T referenced is the best place to visit to stay updated.

Something to consider: While you don't need a passport to travel on a cruise just yet, you may still want to obtain one. If you become ill or have a family emergency that requires you to disembark and fly back home to the states, you may be denied entry without a passport. I'm sure after many hours of being detained you may be allowed back in but why even bother?

My recommendation is to get a passport as soon as possible.

No, depending on where you are going. A world tour, probably.

Hey, can I come? PS - Why don;t you just get a passport;

I heard they are cracking down on them.. If you did something

illegal, you can't get one.

depends on where the ship goes. ask the cruise line. but, it's always safer just to have one.

Check out this site: iBtraveling.com

You can compare prices for cruises and also learn about passports too by clicking on "prepare".

Wish you luck!

Good question. Obviously If you are traveling abroad ( we are going to Caribbeans in spring and definitely need passport to board the ship), you need one. If it's within US I guess not, just like boarding the plane. You should check with your cruise line.

dizzydizzard
With the new Passport laws, you will need a passport to go on any cruise from now on.

Depends on where you are going.

When my fiancee and I went on our first cruise we made sure we had a passport for identification, and I'd recommend it for any out of the country visits you would do, as a CYA.

You definitely have to have one now to go out of the country it is a new law that just passed. My mother-n-law is going to Mexico again this year and she has to get a passport this time because of the new law. My husband and I were thinking of going to the bahamas and i know u have to have a passport because of the new law.

You should talk to a representive from the cruise line you will be taking. When you book for a cruise, they tell you want important documents you will need.
