Just spoke to my travel agent AND just booked a carribean cruise - You still are not required as an American citizen to have a passport for cruises in the Carribean. A certified birth certificate and driver's license will get you back in the States. HOWEVER, if something were to happen and you wer not to make it back aboard your ship, (say you got injured on a island) you would have a hell of a time getting back into the States without a passport.

So, the answer is no, you don't need one right now. But you are taking a chance without one.

You dont NEED a passport until July of 2009. Its on the government website and also many cruise sites. Im going on Freedom of the Seas in October and wont need a passport, just a certified birth certificate and license.

yes you do. it used to be that you didn't need passports to go on cruises to the caribbean, mexico, etc, but since sometime after 9-11, every person going on the cruise needs to have a passport! hope this helps!

If you're cruise ships stops ONLY at US ports, no.

If you're cruising to Canada, Mexico or the Caribbean: PROBABLY.

If you're cruising anywhere else: DEFINITELY.

Technically, by letter of US law, a passport is not required of US citizens to reenter the USA if coming overland or by sea from Canada, Mexico or most (though not all) islands in the Caribbean (this law is, however, currently due to change in 2009). However, even though the US government might let you into the country on a ship, the cruise line itself might not let you board. Here's why: Say you're on a cruise to Mexico (for instance). While snorkeling in Cozumel, you receive a bad sting from a Sting Ray or suffer some other serious injury and have to be flown back to the USA for immediate treatment. Well, if the cruise line let you on their ship with just your ID and birth certificate, then you won't have your passport for your flight and things get complicated. This is why most cruise lines now require passports even if the law doesn't.

It better to have one you never know when you need one. I have had for 9 years and it come in handy instead of a driver license. It's a good id when traveling.

If it is in Europe or in the Uk, it's fine abroad you need one as the british passport only allows you to enter the European Union and United Kingdom if you have a GB Passport,

If you going to other destinations abroad you must have a passport, it is illegal to travel outside Europe without one!

So the answer for you is Yes you must have one!!!

I hope this will help, and have a nice cruise,

Greatman

You need a passport for any cruise. Any time you debark form a ship, you have been outside the United States, so you need a passport.
